This has got to be worth watching.
Hitler: The Rise of Evil
A drama that explores how Hitler – played by Robert Carlyle – evolved into the man who exploited a nation crying out for a leader
Channel 4, Saturday 4 October, 9pm
Details and trailer here.

Carlyle is one of the greatest actors in the world. A total character actor. Brilliant. This is a £10m four-hour mini-series, also set for a region 2 DVD release on 20 October.

Like Band Of Brothers, this is probably one worth keeping.

As an aside there's an interesting article from last year talking about the BBC pulling out of funding the project, presumably for Channel 4 to later pick it up.

edit: Just watched the (very Hollywood) trailer, which reminded me of the hilarious Comedian trailer. "In a time..."

It did read something about it some time ago, and it does indeed sound rather good.

Hitler is probably one of the hardest men to portray well in a film. I seriously doubt robert carlyle is up to the job in all honesty.

After portraying a mad drunken violent maniac and a dole poncer who takes his clothes off, I'd say he was perfect for the role.

Nah the Jewish connection as such, is that he ran at 2 Allied Machinguns during world war 1 to save his Jewish Officer and then nick the 2 guns.

Why don't we just have Tom Cruise playing hitler. We could say that hitler was really american and that he actually won the war for the allies.

Did anyone watch this then ? Was it any good ?

Just watched Conspiracy - dramatisation of the Wansee Conference with Kenneth Brannagh as Heydrich, Colin Firth as Stuckart. Highly recommended, very well acted and very disturbing.

I watched it and I liked it. A lot seemed to be skimmed over and it bugged me that there were so many shots where the up-and-coming Hitler would say something controversial, and the camera would focus on a character looking shocked and with a sense of foreboding and fear for the future. Nobody seemed to think he was a just a nut with extreme views. Nobody. It was like the principle characters could see the holocaust coming.

That said, powerful stuff. Carlyle appears to have done his research and looked like he really felt passionate about the things he was saying. Can't help feeling that a better script editor could have improved things.

I'll be watching the second half next week, and may buy it on DVD after that.

Incidentally, I missed Conspiracy when it was on, but have just ordered it on

DVD, thanks to you, Bids. :)

Don't think you'll be disappointed - very powerful stuff, and really quite scary how methodical and ruthless they were.

I quite enjoyed it but I agree the 'shcocked looks' seemed to read as "OMG - So this is how WW2 starts !!!!11"

Entertaining enough though. Will watch the 2nd half but not buy the DVD.

Yeah I watched the first half, and my god.

Didn't really belive RC could play Hitler that well, but he came up trumps, he was generally scary like the real Hitler.

Can't wait for the second half, looks to be good.
