The silver Surfer was a god like Herald of Galactus... the devourer of worlds. SS wasn't a good or bad guy.. he was simply a messenger for a a galactic entity that ate planets. He was (to start with) Totally amoral, and lived only to serve Galactus as a herald.

He came to earth to prepare it for Galactus's arivall, but slowly found humanity, and so rebelled and was exiled there by his former master. He eventaully became disgusted with man's inhumainity to other men, and thus went "bad".

after that the silver surfer left earth and traveled the cosmos alone.

Haha.
However... the Silver Surfer was a bad guy so to speak. Until he met the fantastic four. Then he betrayed his master, Galactus, and went back to being a good guy.
Apparently the movie might be a loose adaption of "The Coming of Galactus", which was an issue of the Fantastic Four. SS was some random astronomer on some planet, and when Galactus was going to devour his planet he saved it by becoming some herald of Galactus. As his herald he flew around looking for planets that would suit Galactus' "feeding" needs. He was then given the cosmic powers, and he looks like he does because it was his childhood dream. Silver looks and travels on a surfboard.

I never actually read comics but I get stuck reading Wikipedia articles :kissit:

I read that he was then defeated by some experimental military missile and went back to being somewhat "good" and then left to travel.
