Ripping a DVD

Just wondering what software to use if I want to rip a DVD to DivX and store it on my HDD?

Not sure if this against TOS here but if it is I appologize and will remove it...or one of the mods will remove it.

You came to a gaming forum to ask a question that should have been posted on a DivX (DivX ;-) if we're splitting hairs) forum?

You have to use a program like smart ripper first.

grab the divx codec from download.com

then grab flaskmpeg just do a search for it on google.

personally I have 'backup' copies of all the DVDs I own on my HD as divx, either just for safety, or to watch on my PC, instead of having to go to the trouble of finding the damn DVD, going to my tv and DVD player and playing it from that.

True - but what spastic treats their DVD like they do CDs?

Yet you back up DVDs to an inferior format, and you lose the entire point of the DVD (superior quality, enhanced audio, all the other silly features they put on them) ... its hardly worth the effort.

I'll often borrow DVDs from my brother, or Blockbuster/Apollo and rip them because I'm a tight fisted cunt. I do my rips properly though, ripping with dolby surround and embedding that into the visual at a later stage. My DivX's rule. Shame they take so long to encode on this CPU though.

encoding a divx on this machine will probably take about a week :(

I use a combination of the following:

- FairUse
- VDub MP3 Edition
- LAME GUI + dll
- Acid (.exe and GUI)

Don't even THINK about asking me where to get them, how to use them. There are probably millions of easier ways, however, this is tried and tested by me with very good results, so I won't try anything else :)

Hehe, don't worry, I'm no newbie to ripping. I just wondered what you used :)

i went down the sbc/nandub path myself, and as you said... "this is tried and tested by me with very good results, so I won't try anything else" :)

Alright thanks to you guys that posted the good replys. My problem was I could never figure out how to get it started...lol I think I have the codex already...downloaded it saturday...can't figure out how to work it. I'm a dumb@$$... Anyway how powerful does your system have to be to rip a DVD into Divx. I have:

AMD Athlon Tbird "axia" 1ghz @ 1425mhz
Iwill KK266-R mobo
384 mb Crucial pc133 @ 150mhz cas2 w/ 4 way interleave
2x20gb IBM Deskstar 60gxp's in raid0 array
Leadtek 32mb GeForce2 GTS/Pro (210/410)
Pioneer 16x DVD
Sony CD RW 12x8x32

I would like to make them as high quality as possible...um...as long as the movie fits on 700mb...cuz that's all the HDD space I have per movie... :sex:

You do realise that the first step involves ripping the .vob files from the dvd to the hard disk? For big, gert, long films, this has been up to and over 7gb... That's before you start ripping the audio, either as ac3 (typically 300-400mb) or to wav (over 1gb) then encode to mp3 (90-150mb). I would recommend setting aside at least 6gb for an average length film and 8-10gb for a mammoth (Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, AI...).

Thanks guys...yes I realize that I need to have enought space on my HDD to store all the stuff until everything is said and done. I have about 30gigs free right now and I may be installing another 2 100gig HDD's in the near future (DSL is killing my space). Thanks to both of you for the helpful tips...I owe ya.

Well you can start paying off your eternal debt to me by sending me one of those 100gb's ;)
