I don't think it means either to be honest.

It lives in the forest, the oceans and the desert in the same way that the Equator lives there.

I was thinking Ozone - it's blue in colour, it would also kill a human quickly, the sun can break it down ... but it's a gas, and it lives in the sky and other places and it doesn't really move only twice a year.

As to the riddle, I'm thinking it's something abstract, like time or something. I'm rubbish at riddles.

Why would this thing be living in the desert if the sun could kill it? Unless... the only thing hot enough to kill it would be the sun...

I just had a weird idea that it could have been an iceberg or something... But that wouldnt really suit a forest or desert

I think people are thinking too literally on this. I'd say it's far more metaphorical. What the riddles metaphors are though, is something I've yet to work out.

Eg: Morning = Child, Midday = Adult, Night = OAP

Yes, I thought about time or day or night since the sun would kill the night, time also kills humans (eventually) but it exists outside of forests/oceans etc .

Sounds like it's a bi-annual event of something changing on the earth that occurs at the ocean/desert/forest and occurs over land and sea (don't think of it as a solid/liquid/gas, think of solid=land liquid=sea) - the Earth's tilt? one of the tropic lines?
