Revamping Capital Cities

Ok we all know that Jordheim, Camelot and Tir Na Nog are ghost towns. Unless you're doing epic quest, respecing something, or maybe roleplaying, there's pretty much no reason to go there. You can get what you want more easily pretty much anywhere else in game.

I think this is a crying shame. Yay for funky new places with added benefit and a reason to buy the add-ons etc.

However, I was thinking I'd like to see these capital cities used again. To do this you have to give people a reason to want to go there.

So some ideas you may or may not like.

1) The biggy: easy transport to everywhere.

Currently capital cities are a pain in the ass to get to. Have portals to every major town in the realm and also to the various housing choices as well such as entrance, hearth, guild hearth and bind spot. People bind at Goth because its handy for everywhere. Make the capital handier with more places to port to and once again you have a busy city.

2) Crafter benefits

Have a craft area, so that anyone that crafts in that area gets the benefit from being in such a bustling hive where resources are close and easy to get to. Have a percentage increase in crafting speed for when you are working in a capital city. This would be REALLY good because it would make crafting more sociable again instead of everyone locked away in their little houses.

The above changes could be made easily without having to change the scenery or anything. The next change would require some work:

3) Amphitheatre

Simply that. A big place with seats/benches around it. Somewhere for roleplayers to, erm, roleplay some more and would be nice for duels. It would be rather a handy aid to events.

There's a bunch of other stuff too that peeps could probably come up with but you get the idea. Make the cities useful again to people and then you get a bustling capital city, which is what they should really be after all.

I totally agree with you, Capital cities are long over-due for a revamp... well maybe not Camelot, but that could just be my 'I hate Albion' gland flaring up and forcing me to type against my will ;)

Love the idea of an Arena-type area, as well as transport. But i'd probably err on the side of making crafting easier by doing it in capital cities. Imo they should do what they should have done from the very start of the game and stop acting like the 'upper-tier' materials are somthing special anymore. You don't even need to buy SI to keep from tramping over half the frontier to pickup your next lot of materials. Other bonuses would be nice, but I really can't think of anything which wouldn't leave me (i'm still not LGM yet, but i've been slowly working up to it since I started the game - i'm on 940~odd now :D) and other high-level crafters with a bad taste in their mouths.

But yeah, putting this through the Mythic Feedback for what its worth. I'd love to see a Jord upgrade, maybe even opening those ominious doors finally? Maybe an actual horse in the stables? :D

Well if they put the access route to the Catacombs area's close to or inside the capital city's and boosted the trade merchant stock up it would help.

Could have a discount (say 10%) for anything you buy in the capital, and base a bunch of new, good quests there.

tnn is a great places loads of potential npc's to talk to. areans are a good idea and portal in tnn to port u to every major place in the realm imo even if they charge a little extra to places like SI and ToA.

so yes the capital cities have everything to offer but do little else apart from epic quests

No idea Belo. Someone made a throwaway casual remark on another thread a few days ago and this has been on my mind a while so I got to thinking about it :)

what are you talking about? it´s ALLWAYS laggy in the capitals on camlann cause it´s the only safe place exept housing.

on a normal server, it´s empty, you can imagine when a new players starts a Magican at mag mell and then goes into the capital, how his steps echo through the empty bars and silent buildings :(

Capitals aren't network-lag laggy, they just drop your framerate for some reason. I think it's a bug, you get it in small villages too, but, just not as worse.

I like all the ideas suggested so far, here are a few of my own.

Inner city housing. Have an additional area of the city created which has city style housing, so part the capital city is actually inhabited by players. The west gate up by camelot castle is currently unused would make a great portal port to the inner city housing zone.

Big ass dungeon under each city. If any of you remember the game, Eye of the Beholder, I'm thinking of something like that. Have a fair number of different level quests attached to it, so it offers something more than just another place to farm/level.

More quests in the Capitals. With the implementation of a better teleport network, the quests could be located anywhere without becoming a pain in the butt series of horse journies for the player.

Transfer all guild housing to the capital for a start, then as Oro said they should make the capital a travel hub that can transport you to any outpost in the realm. They would of course have to optimise the capital city but in truth the captials are poorly implemented anyway and changes could be made quickly so as to reduce lag. The all we need is something to get the crafters to leave the housing zones once in a while and bob's your aunties husband, busy capital cities again.

Lol I was exactly thinking the same thing today.
I also was thinking about transport but more in the sense of transport in the pvp server.
I also thought of another thing. A warp to a big area (in RVR zone for example) where (if you are grouped with a FG) you can do battle against another FG, a sort of arena (with a fence or wall around it ofc,) would be nice if there where some rules in those areas aswell, like no mezz, or caster group vs caster group. Basicly changing rules every day, or that you can decide the rules with the enemy grou. But i dont think Mythic will ever do that although i loved the idea myself when i thought of it.

You cant offer materials at a discount because you can trinket materials and get 99% sell back value so a 10% discount in central city would mean people buying 100,000 arcanium metal bars and then macro hinging them overnight for free money. Sad but inevitable

I agree, a busy capitol city is a great place for /level 20's to beg for gold.

like rl...

The dungeon-beneath-the-city idea is good-un by the way, makes me think of Bards Tale on my old C64... Brian the Fist!

Hear hear!

And as I have said in some previous thread, give us more LIFE in the capitals, dogs and cats running around, drunken trolls/norse in addition to the admittedly cool drunken dwarf, etc!

Petition inc? :D

I like the arena idea. Would be nice for duels. I allways thought it would be good if you could pick 2 mobs to fight it out and place bets on them

how about proper arena fights were you can wager money on fights, just need a way to stop people from cheating at it.
