I guess I'll be leaving Camlann, and DAoC for a bit since my computer prevents me from connecting with a stable connection to the game.

As soon as I turn on my computer I am barricaded with warnings about viruses from AVG, and my other scanners, so I have to first take 30 mins to remove them all. I then connect to the internet thinking everything is okay, and then log onto daoc, at first with a good connection.

Then halfway through the connecting screen it all goes wrong, and as I come onto the game I am rewarded with massive lag, and an unremovable lag on my ping-metre which even with the lowest settings, no effects, no shadows, near clip planes and everything I can think of, even with the virus scanners, and firewall off, will never be removed.

You know the feeling what happens when you lag in a fight, and might loose because of this, but constant lag is the most annoying thing in the world. You run into magmell, lag for one minute, then find yourself near the South Tower eating some grass, and checking the log what happened. You then try to release and wait 10 seconds for it to actually do anything. After releasing you are rewarded with more lag yet again! And just as my skald did now, I just ld'd after enduring all this.

My first plea is for anyone who knows stuff about technical information check the Tech help section where I have a thread dedicated to this utter bullcrap shit problem. Second is to Voodoo to not overtake my 221k rpts just yet :).

So I'll be inactive for a long while intil I get this stupid thing sorted. I might come on occasionally while I have a AOL connection which runs much more better then my broadband, to do some crafting (can't PvP because my laptop is too slow and lags). I might try to sort stuff out around my laptop so I can run broadband and perhaps PvP again if its my last resort, but tried that before and just really sucks.

So take care fellow Camlann players, and Voodoo, I'll hope to see you sometime soon.

If you gonna use a dial-up use anyone BUT AOL. They are the worst ISP in the history of the internet.

Do you have a firewall installed mate? If not grab one and see if it helps. If you still being overrun by Viri then it may well be easier to format and re-install making sure that you have firewall and anti-virus installed before connecting to the internet.

Who provides your broadband connection mate? Some companies offer free support line that you can call and they may be able to help.

Argh. Sounds like mission impossible. I can't give any advice on this as I'm not a guru® but I still wish you luck.

Aol might be pretty crap, but good enough for serfing the internet whenever you want. Don't really use it to play DAoC on.

Had Zone Alarm or whatever installed, but the person who recommended it said it was crap, and I know its crap after it asked whether I wanted every single programme to run on internet/ as a server, and i had no idea what to do so denyed everything which might have made matters worse, but not 100% sure.

Least I know AVS is a good scanner, and has removed most of my virus's. Just piss annoying when it goes through all the DAoC folders, wish I could skip that :p.

Do you know a reliable firewall that I can download from the net for free?

Using Demon ASDL, good enough to run DAoC, but still get the odd lag. For the past week its been hell, but some times its run normally after 4-5 hours of trying. Seems all this problem had started after I got a 'Windows didn't start normally.. etc..' error thing which never came off. Before it was working fine, and I had no problems. Now I'm not sure if I'll ever get my 50k lrp back for Cavel :(.

Pull the plug to the internet.
Install Firewall.
Install and run Ad-aware and Norton Anti-Virus.
Put the plug back.

Worked for a friend of mine, not the same problem but this could happen if you have been on too many porn sights and clicked too many shitty links.

Zone Alarm is turd, but it does seem to work on the most part, I used to use BlackICE defender while at Uni but don't know it thats still about or any good these days.

Running Ad-aware is a good idea will clear out alot of dodgey stuff. Don't know of any free firewall software have mine on my router so I'm happy at just that. Ofc you can download firewall software from Kazaa etc but with the state of your computer dunno if you wanna open yourself up for that ;).

Check it is infact your pc and not your connection. Do you have a network set-up? If so try pinging your router and see the response times and packet loss. If it seems normal try pinging an outside location I find pinging www.bbc.co.uk is a good measure point. If this is then not normal it may well be your isp at fault. I had this problem recently as you may remember :).

How you restore your computer:

Copy all the data you wanna save to another drive/computer/cd

format c:

reinstall windows

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE, you cant even just visit some homepage, or check your mail, DONT DO NOTHING! Run windows update, and be sure you have runned it 2-3 times total, as you cant install all at once.

then go to www.mozilla.org download the firefox browser, and never again use microsoft internet explorer.

you can if you feel like it, run with a virus scanner too, not nescesary if you know what you do on your computer, f.ex. dont open random emails and spam etc.

hope it helps

Agnitum Firewall

If you want a good Firewall try agnitum. I tried several and imo this is the best one. Its not free but you can try it out for 30 days.

http://www.agnitum.com/

Zone Alarm is free for personal use but sux. Had problems keeping home network from being blocked. it would work fine for weeks then suddenly block other comps from server/internet.

Good luck.

hmmm, to start off with

check for spyware: I use a combination of programs: Ad-aware, spysweeper & another called Search & destroy. Those 3 will pick up majority of the dodgy prog's out there (Remeber to update em).

2nd: Use a online virus scanner such as panda software or housecall.

3rd: If you using win XP, get SP2, it is very good, stops alot of shite happening - they might've fixed the inbuilt firewall.

for Firewalls, Blackice or Norton firewall are nice to use

4th: If all else fails then backup essential prog's & /format if you can.

I wouldn't trust you with my PC. I bet it was you who did this to me after I wouldn't let you kill me for cloak exp!

Anyway all seems fine now, the computer seems alot faster after a reinstall, and I think i've got rid of whats caused it.
