If only we could still have animated avatars!

(would of course require Hasslehoff or Faceman in the animation as well)

I went out last night, there were a scary amount of young things celebrating results. Lots of them wearing the typical school uniform thing. I felt old and im only 24.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, however it is linked to results day :p Was just wondering if anyone here has done a product design course (specifically engineering or automotive design) or peoples opinions on wether its a cop out subject.
I applied to do mechanical engineering at Aston however my maths wasn't up to the task (was an E), however they've said they can offer me a place on any product design course, looking at the page it seems half decent http://www.aston.ac.uk/prospective-students/ug/pros/eas/20easpdp.jsp
however they're not exactly going to advertise it as a dead end route.

Anyway thanks for any opinions or information, as I have to decide between that or a laboratory apprenticeship which would be easy work but atleast has a definate job at the end.

Depends what you want to do, if you don't have an aim then go and do something you will enjoy as you have a better chance of actually sticking with the course. Alot of people drop out the first year because the course they choose sounded good at school, but once they were on the course they realised they hated it.

Many people say that you don't need a degree, and yes you "don't" need one... you will progress up the corporate ladder. However you will then suddenly find yourself at the ceiling of advancement as many higher end positions require a tick in the degree box just to consider you.

Aston is a good uni, So yeh i would say yes. But go through clearing looking to see if other uni's will let you on their course's however the best spots will now be taken. Also another option is that if you have your foot in the door at a uni its very possible when you are at the uni to change courses.

The uni tables give you an indication, but you have the times table and the guardian and others and they fluctuate wildly with their rankings. Best bet is to goto the uni, havew a look round and get a feel for the place and the people. For instace Royal holloway is meant to be a good uni, but deeply lacking in the student experience. Leicster is a good uni but is lower in the table but alot of students enjoy their time there. People who goto Loughborough may love the place because they love sport. And people who go Oxford Brookes may love the place because of the type of people who go there. Its subjective to your personal tastes, but the more establised uni's will give a better employment rate.
