do you have somewhere else to go? If so, they might be able to help.

but you don't want to leave on bad terms; you'd like a ref. from them in the future?

I'd try to leave on good terms if at all possible .Talk to your management, tell them you feel most strongly that the job isn't for you and work out an arrangement.

Just tell them that you are taking part in a fund raising 4x4 chairty race to raise money for the poor children of Iraq who now want to have sex change operations.

Take a resignation letter to your boss...tell him you are resigning and hand him the letter...

Just make sure your reasons are constructive and wont cause problems and you should be fine...

This is the best way so far; though you don't need to say anything negative about your job as it may affect a future reference they write for you. Don't make up any lies either. Just say you've been offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something you really want to do and that you unfortunatley need to do it now so you have to leave.

You will probably have to work some notice depending on the contract, but its usuall a week for waged staff and a month for salaried.

If you leave on the lurch and not work your notice they wont take it kindly.

Probation period but they still require a weeks notice

Dont worry about it you are perfectly entitled to leave if you wish. Thats his problem to replace you.

that's what it boils down to really, just try to be nice about it; try not to burn any bridges, but if you have no choice: fuck it, New Zealand man!

Have you not considered asking for a career break from them ? Some companies call it a sabbatical. You maybe able to negotiate a better job as you have travlled and broadened your horizons. Push comes to shove you would still have a job until something decent comes up.

You do not need to specify anything about your reasons for leaving, state you wish to resign and leave it at that, keep it simple.

They will sort out leaving arrangements, you don't need to specify those either, although you can give preferences.

Companies may not give bad references, don't worry about that angle, even if you leave under a cloud, as long as you have not violated a contract or committed a criminal offense it is fine.

Paid sabbaticals (on reduced salary) would not allow you to seek other employment. Unpaid is okay.

No but they use 3 types of references one good one bad and a neutral one, well atleast according to a friend of mine :(

The Letter

Dear [person]

As required by my contract of employment, I herby give you one week’s of my intention to leave my position as Junior Technician. I will endeavour to complete any tasks assigned to me before that time.

I am going to leave to pursue a career in business with the ultimate aim of going into the finance sector. I have decided that the IT industry although at times interesting is not the profession that I will be happy in and being young I still have the opportunity to experiment to find the industry that I will enjoy.

I wish you and [company] every good fortune and I would like to thank you for having me as part of your team, you have given me the chance to make a change before I make one of the biggest mistakes that would have affected the rest of my life.

Yours Sincerely
Furr

The being young bit might 'miff' your boss who will presumably feel that he is past making any life-changing decisions. I just didn't understand the last bit.

Otherwise, nice letter.

Tell them your dad is terminally ill. Someone where I work has done this 5 times or so. Amusingly at his last workplace his dad rang him at work about a week after he was supposed to have bought the farm = sacked.
