repairing xp

I have had a problem with my video card and XP, here: http://forums.barrysworld.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84735. I have installed xp on a separate drive, and the card runs fine on that, so I am left with only one answer - that XP is a bit buggered.

I have tried running the recovery console, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on my copy of XP (just goes to command line), is there any way, utilities, registry hacks, any way at all that I can get windows to completely remove and then reinstall everything related to video cards, drivers, AGP, etc?

If I can't find a solution, I'm going to have to do the old format etc, but thats not something I want to spend my time doing tbh, it takes ages to reinstall everything, and get it all patched up.

From what I have seen posted before, you choose the option to make a new XP install, the CD will detect the existing install, and then ask if you want to repair it. It will then automagically replace all the system files.

But I don't have XP, so don't blame me if that is slightly inaccurate.

My copy must be buggered. I'll have to 'ring microsoft' and get a new one ahem

Would this have something to do with it?

It could very well Tom.

Does the card have one of those extra power connectors?
iirc its an MX so it shouldn't do but making sure ;)

Is your PSU up to the job, you recently upgraded and this could mean your PSU can't handle the new gear with all the old stuff properly.

It doesnt have a power connector. There is a bios option to increase the AGP voltage, but I'm not sure about using that.

The PSU should be fine, I will unplug a HD or two and see if that makes a difference. I'm off to Newcastle for a day anyway, fuck the stupid computer tbh. :D

Just to clarify, that is the recovery console :) It's very much oriented towards sysadmins, not users.

Will is also correct about the "Repair" function, though I must concede I've never used it sucessfully. The one time I did, I wanted it to restore my Master Boot Record, and it didn't, so I never found out what it did to the rest of the system :p
