Refreshing? I think its is mixed with a good stench of manure....
The current government seem to want to undo the progress made by the previous by putting a negative spin on it...

Kids in schools should be fed healthy food.
It helps them concentrate and helps them learn.

I think the idea is good but perhaps the execution of it has been wrong. If kids can still buy/get crap for lunch then that should be controlled....

I can't see why there is so much resistance to giving children healthy food??

Of course all the previous years of chips, and beans has only turned out a nation of retards. It's certainly a good job that all those who have made a go of their lives over the past 50 years managed to get in those special schools where only the finest organic ingredients were provided.

I was pretty disgusted to learn from a teacher friend of mine recently that most kids these days are fed on those plastic prison issue food tray things where they slop food into compartments on it. Perhaps they should feed parliment like that for a year, see how well it goes down.

Control! Control! You must all be controlled!!

The article shows that years of Labour control freakery has had precisely the opposite effect the control freaks intended. Not that they'll acknowledge that...

As was said in that article, I think we will have to ban shops near schools as well :p

There was no progress - quite the reverse -less kids eat school dinners now than did before.

It was about as sucessfull as prohibition :p

My school was part of Jamie Oliver's school dinners, even met the chap (he was a complete and utter prick, really rude)

I was in sixth form so usually went out of school for lunch but i tried his new food out once and to be honest it wasn't nice. There was also a noticable, massive reduction in pupils eating school dinners.

Schools shouldn't interfere with packed lunches, I couldn't believe it when my little cousin told me his packed lunch gets inspected. As a kid, my mum used to pack me cheese sandwiches a packet of crisps, a choc bar and a bottle of Ribiena and maybe an apple once in a while, he said most of that wouldn't be allowed, cheese and the choc/crisps wouldn't be allowed and a letter would be sent home. Its gotten out of hand, too much control.

Did you actually read the article or are you so far up Labour's arse that you are incapable of doing so?

It helps them concentrate and helps them learn.

Theres no solid data on this - any changes are likely due to the placebo effect rather than diet.

Its also tough when tests get easier every year and results always improve to pickout if any is down to diet.

Obviously no-one wants that but since the drugs education was based on just say no and we are flooded with drugs now you have to see that prohibiting something kids want is not the answer?

Yep...but it should be done by educating parents and kids, not be forcing them into it changing their ways. They should actually be fed whatever the hell the like (within the menu ofc) but they should be educated into picking the healthy option.

You can't force people into changing their lifestyle, it has been proven time and again that it just doesn't work, as mentioned above with the prohibition of drugs.

That bit made me do a little sex wee.

The minister used a very sensible sentence, then followed it up with a non-evidence-based viewpoint. There are studies which look into healthy school meals and the effect they have on children, but I doubt Andrew Lansley has spent any time considering them.

I don't think anyone's arguing for fat people.

What people are saying, Dys, is that only fools believe that you can force populations to do what you want them to.

The last Labour government is evidence of this. Along with almost every example of prohibition known to mankind...

It's simple economics.
"Good" food costs more than "bad" food.
People with less money buy "bad food" because they get more quantity for their cash.
People with larger incomes can afford to buy "good" food.

I find the whole idea of "educating" people about food is patronising.

They need to bring in a law that says all food that is sold has to be actually food - and not poison. Or something.

Companies are always going to sell stuff that doesn't actually constitute healthy food (and shit that is absolutely awful for ya) as long as they're allowed to do so.

I don't know how it'd be workable tho. Loads of people will fight for their McD's despite the fact that it's not really food.

Whilst I'm not keen on a government interfering with peoples lives like the previous Labour government, there are some things which you can't just leave to the schools or the children. Otherwise schools/caterers would serve up the cheapest food possible they can get away with, a huge amount of children would choose the junk food option.

However forcing children into it by banning the junk food was never going to work anyway. The entire thing needs thinking through carefully instead of rushing it.

When I was in secondary 1995 and 2000 I seem to recall that chips were served EVERYDAY unless my memory fails me.

It was pretty stupid, and I can see why people would want their kids to eat something better.

For the free school meals kids it could be their only proper meal of the day so calorie content is a bit moot - its not good if they start skipping it.

Tbh schools should offer a healthy alternative to chips but it must still be a choice because at some point those kids will be free of the school and if youve made junk food seem forbidden and rebelious they will be straight to it.
