Recording desktop action as a video file?

All,

I want to record my window's desktop action, or capture it to an mpeg/avi/wmv file so that I can demonstrate a 3D room i've created to my sister who lives in london (stills won't really do it justice).

Anyone know of a freeware, or shareware prog that can do this?

Camtasia Studio is what I used, its pretty good.

I did this recently and used an open source app called CamStudio. It's quite ugly, but works well I found. Note that it uses whatever codecs are installed into Windows, so you might need to install an up to date Codec pack to create suitable size:quality movies.

I've used HyperCam and a couple of others whose names escape me (I just woke up), but there's loads of 'em.

I use Matchware Screencorder 4.

Also - if the application uses hardware acceration - you may want to see if Fraps works. Fraps is generally used to record game footage on PC.

If you used Google Sketchup then I've had a quick test and Fraps does work on it. You can see the mouse pointer tho but it captures everything else.
