So whats happened to all these music sharing sites that have no central location, ie no way to have them shutdown

It's a lot easier to find the stuff I want to listen to on programs like Kazaa, or at least whenever I've tried to find something elsewhere it's been impossible. That said, I'd appreciate knowing where else to look :)

So, by shutting down the individual networks they are forcing users to consolidate on one of the remaining ones and make file sharing a lot easier - WTG !

Well, theoretically, you're limited to being in indirect contact with X number of hosts, with GNUtella. X varies according to how many hosts you're directly connected to, and how many hosts everyone else has direct connections with.

You can also set the maximum number of hops to go, which will drastically affect the number if hosts that are within your reach.

In other words, a large influx of users on GNUtella will not change it very much. It will just make it easier to find people closer to you.

then what happens when they've nailed kazaa and move on to gnutella?

i'm not really fussed about all this anymore anyway, i only ever used audio galaxy (and before that napster) to trial a few tracks before buying them... the RIAA need to acknowledge that - what better way to sell tracks than if you can try them first..

fs if you can encrypt and secure a track for pay-per-download, surely you can do something to make it self-destruct in X time.

the only thing i really DO give a shit about, is securing disks to stop ya copying them for personal use, for example i might wanna make a MD of something for my car, or an MP3 copy for use on the pc....

when you've got hundreds of bloody disks, and you want to hear songs from more than one artist, it's an absolute CUNT to swap the things over all the time.

by all means maim the bastards that copy stuff to distribute to their friends etc etc.

The RIAA don't actually represent any artists, they actually only represent the distributors of music, who understandably are worried that a _free_ distrubtion mechanism like the internet is going to damage their profits.

If only they'd wake up and consider using the internet instead of trying to block it. Consider putting Britney's next hit on a free download page, and then imagine how much an advertiser would pay to get his pop-up on there ...

This is the very point, GNUtella is one of the only, if not the only, file sharing network, that can operate completely independantly of any servers. What's more, GNUtella is basically a protocol - Anyone can make their own client for it, hence there is no single piece of software to kill off.

The only way you could stop GNUtella, would be to get ISPs to block the main port. However, you can use any port for GNUtella, as long as other people are using the same one, so this would be a very poor way to stop it - People would simply start using the ports of popular services such as pop3, and then you'd have _no_ way to stop them.

I'm sure something will be done to legally stop all this mp3 swapping, but there's loads of programmers out there who are quite capable of making peer to peer file sharing programs. :D

Swapping music won't stop, it'll just be reborn into something a little different I think.

They've gone after Kazaa before. Each one they close another one appears.
