Recommended graphics cards for 3D shooters

I am currently running a Savage 4 395 card but am finding it slows down particulary badly while playing unreal tourny & Quake 3. I have been told I should get the Gerforce 2 GTS card, but I was hoping somebody could give me some advice. Is it worth upgrading yet or should I wait until my card gets older as it works fine for other games (although there is noticeable slowdown in the Sims). Also is the GTS the best card to get. Please help!

GTS is most probably best on a price/performance basis :)

Also depends on what system you have at the moment.

I agree... a GeForce2 Mx card is best unless you have a v fast system and lots of money.

Yeah creatives 3DBlaster Geforce 2 MX is selling for £100 at jungle.com It isn't the latest card but it will keep you going for quite some time. I have a TNT2 (@140 got to get a fan to go any higher) and it still provides me with pretty sweet graphics at an acceptable framerate.

I only got 1300 points on Mad onions 3D mark 2000 (that was b4 i o/c must run it again) on a celeron 400, TNT2 m64 32mb, 64mb sdram. But i looked at results for people running AMD duron 800 with same spec and they had nearly 3 times higher on average so i am soon going to update my CPU/mobo.

Anyone else use 3d mark?

Yep, 3D Mark gave me a rating of 5800 or so on my system (if I remember).

Geforce 2 Ultra is best for pure framerate, Voodoo 5 gives some xcellent anti-aliasing if that is what your taste runs to. Don't think that you'd notice it unless you are some kind of android.

Git, I got a Framerate of 7 in the adventure game high detail test. and about 3FPS in the high polygon count with 8 colours (it didn't tell me the second one, it was just so slow i could actually count each frame :D)

For FPS games in general NVidia cards r the best. Not the best visual quality but the highest framerates and in the end if u want success that matters more. The exception is that in UT a Voodoo card is still a little bit better.

That's about it :)

The Savage4 that I have (Diamond StealthIII s540) works pretty well for pretty much every game out. I have, however, retired it from duties in my main pc. It's now in my second box. My main machine now has a Geforce2 MX in it (Hercules Prophet II MX) and it's great. Buy one now!

My opinions on graphics cards are pretty well known, but just in case you didnt get them first time round :)

Geforce family - wouldnt touch one if there was a crate of Guiness under it. After getting burned with a TNT2u I aint going back to nVIDIA.

Voodoo 5 - Still a nice card (I'm a UT'er who hates Q3), and coming down in price quite rapidly. The Anti-aliasing rocks and you are almost guaranteed never to have a compatibility/stability probllem ever.

Radeon - this is where its at imo. If you have an Intel chipset, you probably won't go wrong with one. Visual quality to die for in 32-bit, extra features in a list as long as your arm, and probably the most future-proof out of all the cards out there atm. There is talk of an all new driver set on the way, which should help things. The difference in performance between it and a GTS never gets much more than 7fps at men's resolutions (1024 and up), and the framerates are supposedly A LOT more stable than GTS.

The choice is yours.

The ultra is i big pile of poop for what they charge for it, if i were going to get a top range card i would get a pro and overclock it.

Errrrrm, ever seen Giants running on a geforce? thought not. For visual quality, the geforce blows every single other gfx card out of the water hands down, witht he exception of the radeon (cos it's just a fucking geffer clone bods, wake up n smell the coffee)

Radeon does look a bit better in most games. Voodoo looks best in UT. GeForce is a good all-rounder tho.
