I have no idea about books/websites as i started it as a course in the school, or book was called Java Swing i think and it was written by our tutor. Wasn't that good i think since i spent most of my time on the internet when i got stuck :) Didn't use a specific page tho.

I would guess all starting books/websites are equally good use different programming styles.

Good page(not starting tho but you will need it :p)

Visual studios 2005 is what I've been using for c# at uni and it really is good for it. If I remember right, java is incorporated into it too ;)

I started on Objects First with Java. Easy book with alot of examples and theory in it. Not hard at all to understand and get started with. It uses the BlueJ environment just to give you an easy start on handling classes, methods and objects. Also makes it easier because its got a GUI that graphically shows what classes extends which...

Later on you'd have to move on to emacs (or notepad or w/e fits you).

Havent really been doing any javascript :>
