That headset is rather silly but proper noise cancelling headphones are amazing especially if you are on a plane/train. I think the cheapest ones are around £150 but don't come with a microphone.

Jim, I have a lush Speedlink surround sound one. Awesome headset, very comfy, really decent mic. It also has a switching box so you can switch between speakers and headset without plugging/unplugging on the floor!
This is the one I have: Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Home Edition Headset - Ebuyer

or these are the same ones I think without the switch box:
Speedlink SL-8795 Medusa 5.1 Mobile Edition - Ebuyer

I'd definitely recommend it, its awesome, and matrix with surround sound and force feedback on (oh yes! it rumbles when its really loud) is amazing.

I have the Medusa ProGamer 5.1 headset, the sound is great but pretty tricky to set up, as you need a good soundcard to utilize them fully.

I use an older version of this : Plantronics )) Computer )) Headsets )) .Audio? 310
I've got a sound card in my pc, so i have the game sound through speakers from my x-fi, and the headset connected to the motherboard sound chip. set teamspeak/vent/whatever to use the onboard chip for voice, and it works great, without stopping you hearing whatever may be going on around you

Those are headphones, not a headset...

Following this with interest, I need a new one and all my previous ones has falled apart like they was designed to break...

I don't like how headsets look stupid when your not actually using the mic.. can spend alot of money of them then you can't really take them anywhere . Best to just put a cheap mic on the desk!

but fair enough if your dead set on having a mic physically on your headphones

Gonna check if this works on my latest machine build with Vista 64. Have a spare SB X-Fi PCI card and the on-board sound is not bad (Asus P5N32-Sli). Usually I just run teamspeak on seperate PC or laptop close by.

Following the thread as I also need a new gaming headset, mine broke in my travel case on return from a biz trip :(

What I really need is a permanent one for home and a travel one with it's own case. Anyone know of a travel set? Can't seem to find anything on web.

It is an aircraft headset and has to be stringently tested to DO-160E standards. Which include working in temperature ranges like -30 to +55 degrees C. They are electromagnetically shielded and also pass flamability tests.

Like most things on an aircraft most of the cost goes to certifying the parts for aircraft usage.

BOSE - Buy Other Sound Equipment ;p

The Speedlinks, although they sound pretty good they have a nasty habit of breaking. You're probably better off getting a set of Sennheiser hd555's or getting some Goldring DR150s and a desktop mic... generally the best bet

Bose is crap, logitech overpriced, as is creative labs.*
I'd say go Sennheiser. Good quality, not too expensive (but mind you, not too cheap either ;-))

If you don't mind a loose microphone on your desk, get a good headphone set. Sennheiser again is good for decent price. JBL if you don't care too much about price

*personal opinion ofcourse...
