Recommend me a good hardrive please.

I recently bought the 400 gig and 300 gig Seagate SATA NVQ barracuda 7200.8 disks - and I've been very impressed by them. Fast, reliable (so far 
) and very, very quiet. Plus for the first time ever - I actually picked a piece of hardware that subsequently reviewed in the mags and is coming out on top

a disk ive heard alot about when it comes about fast performing hdd's is Western Digital Raptor 74GB SATA 8MB 10000RPM, kinda intrested about that myself when it will come to upgrade day, and just put a old comp in the closet or smth with some large hdd's for filestorage using.

but i think most drives are good, some just work better for some people, or you hear someone that has loads of trouble with one, but as you said yourself, the seek time is under half on the WD over the Maxtor, so for main drive i would rather have a fast one, and use a slower and larger for long term file storage if i had the money to buy more then 1 disk.

Only problem I've found with the 2 Maxtor ones in this computer is they tend it get quite hot over a time, but they've lasted 2-3 years so far.
Like you said all has their favs, will look into some reviews for the Western one, maybe get later on as a boot drive, not seen one with as fast a seek time as that one so far. :O

The 74GB Raptors are still the fastest SATA drives you can buy, but they're reputed to be noisy.
I'm using a couple of the 300GB Maxtor(16mb) drives now. I was going to buy one Raptor as the OS disk, but considering the amount of crap I download, 600GB >> 374GB
The Maxtors can be noisy too, they make a horrid crunching sound.
In DAoC, I still get a couple of seconds lag when running into zergs, while skins/textures load.
imo, the two high capacity hardrives to look at now would be the Maxtor and Seagate NCQ models.

NCQ basically helps when you are multitasking and the drive needs to access lots of different data in a short space of time, the drive logic basically sorts out the data requests into what ever order it thinks it can perform the fastest. Now on a single cpu it only has a small impact, on a dual cpu/core system it is giving some serious performance boosts in benchmarks that stress the system with multiple tasks and drive read/writes. It is a new technology to the desktop with IDE drives but it has been in SCSI drives for ages and is used on pretty much all high end workstations/servers. Right now it isn't that vital for the desktop but when dual core comes along it is a must have in my opinion.
I've 74GB Raptor and can't really recommend it - the performance isn't all that great considering how much it costs. That been said I dont need more space so getting another Raptor for Raid0 Oh, I havent' actually heard any noise from this HDD but that may have something to do with my noisy GPU-cooler

It kinda depends on what motherboard you have - some boards are less than happy with some harddisks. (Don't use Maxtor when you're using an Asus SLI Deluxe board, for example).
Using Raid onboard of your mobo is also a factor - again, some drives like it, some don't. Check your mobo's website for recommended websites, or just use google and prevent yourself a missbuy.

well i use the Seagate 160gb 7200rpm, with 8mb cache, works ok, nice load speed ect... i get very little lag in RvR but the part around the system are good aswell.
If i was to upgrade i would think of getting the Raptor as a O/S and 'game' HDD, and i would probably get one of the 16mb cache HDD i like seagate so would go seagate.
