Right, PS3 is finally dead after months of serial toddler abuse. I need something to play the occasional BD on, but there's not much point in getting another PS3 as I never play console games anymore and I have plenty of alternate ways to stream/watch Netflix etc. So I need a good, but inexpensive Bluray player. Any ideas? TV is a Samsung.

get another ps3....
they are relatively cheap, you can use it as storing capacity for pictures, movies etc on your network.
stream from laptop / pc to ps3 and watch it on it.. :)

for only 249€!

Any old crap really, I am not sure there is all that much difference these days, it's such old tech. Have a look in Tesco (Do you have Tesco in Ireland?)

Thanks for reading what I wrote . I already have plenty of ways to stream (the TV has dlna, I have an AppleTV and and a Raspberry Pi is on the way). Cheapest new PS3 is still €230-odd and I just don't need it.

Last I looked in order to get a PS3 equivalent stand-alone BR player of equal quality it would cost more than a PS3.

First place I looked. Sony, Panasonic and Samsung all for around €120 but I've no idea if one brand stands out.

Due to Sony now incorporating Cinavia into their BD players, I'd avoid them. No idea about Samsungs. Personally I like Pannies for my players:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMP-BDT120-Network-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B0083SX5SA £109

Claim Avatar 3D and Titanic 3D on Blu-ray when you purchase this product between between August 2, 2012 and December 31, 2012

For something more basic (no 3D for a start):
www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMP-BD75EB-K-Booting-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B004MPQR4M £60

I'm going to get that Panasonic. We sell it so I get staff discount.

Try isohunt.com, they have great selection of free movies in HD that play on any PC or MAC.

My old DVD player has finally bit the dust so I'm going to get a Blu-ray. Are players with Cinavia protection are to be automatically avoided? I also have a Samsung telly and the DLNA stuff on a wireless-enabled BR player (BD-E5700 frinstance) plays nicer with a Samsung telly (I think). But that is one of the cinavia players, so avoid?

I would avoid, but up to you. If you're never gonna play backups then it wont affect you. :)

Well I am. But not off of burned BR discs, it would be mkv's straight across the network or off of a portable hard drive. I can plug a USB hard drive into the TV as it is but I quite liked the idea of the integrated wifi in the Blu-ray player, as it's not easy to get a network cable to where the TV is. I could just get a wireless dongle for the TV I suppose. Is there anything that I won't be able to do if I don't get a Samsung player?

I'm reading things that say that even re-encoded mkv's will flag up warnings with Cinavia because the watermark survives compression and re-encoding. :(

Indeed. It certainly kicks in with the PS3, I assume it would with the a BD player too.

TBH I get most of my HD material from Youtube.
Download stuff like this in 1080, bang it on the projector and sit back and dream.
