Was wondering, since most people probably have pop-up killers running, whether you could advise of new private messages in the same way that the user is flagged as being online under the Author info .....

It's a javascript pop-up so it should still tell you when you have a message unless you have javascript disabled, ofc when you click to view the message your pop-up blocker will stop it, but you can just click "profile" then "private messages" to view them.
