Hiya wonder if I can have some help :(

I have just built a new PC. Its an AMD XP 1700+with 128Mb DDR and a Geforce 4 Graphics card. With an MSI Mboard Due to my budget I put in a generic 30Gb Hard disk.

I came to installing my software and windows went on fine (98), office went on fine. I have come to installing my games that I had on my previous machine e.g. counterstrike and it’s throwing wobblers! I/O error corrupt media and the like, I have done a Norton disk doctor inc. a surface test and it says everything is OK. The surfaces of the disks are fine and OK they are spotless!

I bought DF land Warrior yest and it went on no probs! Why is this happening, I put CS on my machine at work and No probs!

Someone help me please :(

What model is the MSi board?

have you tried installing the Via 4in1 drivers (www.viaarena.com)

what about trying the PCI Latency Patch (available here with a few extra utilites to boot)

have you got the 80pin cable on the drive? (40pin is large and bulky cables, 80pin are the thinner cables that hold their shape better when bent)

give us more info and we might be able to diagnose the problem better (for understanding, please read this post by embattle, which co-incidentally is a sticky at the top of the forum  )

Right then here we go

I have

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
128 DDR 266 Mhz 184Pin Memory
Soundblaster 128 PCI
30Gb UDMA IDE Hard Disk
64Mb Geforce 4 MX 420 AGP Card
MSI K7T266 Pro 2-A Motherboard

When I am trying to install some of my old games that were on my old system

CS,UT and some others I am getting several errors

All about the same or similar, The Media

'an IO error occurred while installing the file, this is normally caused by bad installation or corrupt media type'

Now I have Used Norton on my hard drive including the Surface and nothing, The disks are spotless and what rattles me is that I have installed them with ease at work, so what is the problem?

Surley it cant be the hard disk its brand spanking new, please help :(

MEMORY FFS

Its your crappy DDR dimm probably.

I would seriously think about trying another DIMM in there m8.

I had a similar problem a while back.

XP with that much memory would be a bitch to run anyway. And don't even think about ME, its a downgrade from 98.

I'm not sure about 2K, I've never run it on a machine with less than 512MB. It could be fine on 128, it might suck.

I think your problem is the CD drive too. Seems like the logical place to start.

Just get another 128mb of ram you will notice a significant speed increase and it will be more capable of running XP.

My work machine ran XP with 128Mb RAM once XP had loaded and I had opened Outlook we were onto using the SwapFile.

More ram :)

XP Pro runs gr8 on my primary machine (Athlon XP2000 512DDR)

It ran really shit on my secondary machine when I first installed it (P3-450 128mb pc100 SDRAM) was jurky slow... Stuck another 128chip I found for around 10quid and it runs absolutely fine now for non-gaming related tasks (except still good for network QW heh).... win XP gets really pissed off if you insult it with less than 256 ram.... UPGRADE YOUR RAM.... DON'T JUST SIT THERE.... DO IT  You know it makes sense!
