Rant about UT:RA lamers

Does anyone else encounter l33t c***0rs who try to tell you what weapons to kill them with (ONLY when playing UT:RA)?

I was on a server in east coast USA, 1 on 1 against some yank LPB. My ping was about 180 odd, which was playable enough, and we're trading rockets and suchlike. The LPB begins having fun with the sniper rifle at your humble narrator's expense, but yours truly adjusts by occupying positions where "assload of rockets" becomes an effective countering tactic (this being a fairly small arena).

After a couple of rounds, we find ourselves both on the ground floor of the arena. Yours truly is feeling quite healthy, but the LPB is surely in danger of kicking the bucket. Next, the LPB opens up with alt-fire pulse gun (at close range), which makes my health drop rapidly and the screen becomes that very distracting colour. The floor is pretty level and there's only a central pillar for cover.

From my 100% abstinence from pulse and mini so far, it is clear that this LPB is looking to quickly finish off your humble narrator. I am slightly offended by this development, thinking to myself that it is surely near the top of the list labelled "rude tactics from rude fellows who stare death in the face".

I decide to respond in kind, and only a few bullets from my minigun have to nick the guy before he keels over. Cries of "gay" emanate from the petulant loser of this particular round. On questioning, it transpires that the minigun is always lame (at whatever range and whatever ping) whereas the pulse gun at close range and in the hands of an LPB is never lame! Well **** me! I obviously didn't know as much about the game as I thought!

Sorry for this boring story, which is true except for a bit of artistic license, but it is necessary background to highlist the set of double standards that a lot of l33t cunt0r players seem to employ as their code of honour.

There are other examples of this kind of double standard that I can think of, such as LPBs cynically taking maximum advantage of their ping advantage and constantly using the sniper rifle against modemers in open arenas. This is not wrong in itself, but it is pure hypocrisy when the same LPBs start moaning about what weapons the other guy is using.

When it comes to choosing between minigun and pulse gun, I go for minigun because I have a key handy for it (from playing DM). To me there isn't a lot of difference between the pulse gun and the minigun. Both can mess up a dude quickly and both are often used as 'finishing weapons'. That's just me though - some players may be able to use one of those two better than the other though.

Personally, I would like to play UT:RA using all of the weapons. Generally speaking, if somebody uses a particular type of weapon, I will respond in kind. All those l33t c***s can **** off.

yeah but...

well, im a "l33t" (debatable) LPB RA lamer, and RA is about skill, just running around with the flak or mini spraying it everywhere is not skill, however, if the way you describe it is how it occured, then i agree he was being hippocritical, i have known people use the "shaft" fire on the pulse, and i havn't complained although it did affect me quite a bit health wise... anyways he was a yank so ignore him :)

I completely agree with you.

If this guy was so leet then he should be able to avoid your mini gun!

Besides, I thought the point of the game was to kill the opponent....and whats to stop anyone using the most appropriate weapon in a given situation to achieve this?

I can vaguely see peoples problem with flak cannon (although I dont have a problem myself), cos it is possible to spray it around and get random kills. But the minigun, in order to be used effectively, requires precise skill and aim, and i reckon its sour grapes from any "leet" peops that cant stand to be on the end of that. Especially to finish someone off.

After all, can these people really claim that there is a great deal of skill in rocket spamming with 6 rockets? And this happens a lot in RA.

That's just the way of Rocket Arena. In RA 1 shaft was sometimes considered lame. In RA2 it got out of hand. Double Shotty was nearly always considered lame. Often the chaingun too. Sometimes using anything other than rail was met with a barrage of bl33ting.

It's human nature to try to adapt the game to how you want it to be played by insulting others. Ignore em and frag em :)

Muddy...

I am not calling you a lamer unless you whinge about your FPS all the time, what weapons the other guy is using, or the other guy's lag ("ffs, i cant hit u, u are lagging!!") :)

In my opinion, none of the weapons are really lame. And if there are any weapons that are lame, they're certainly not the mini or the pulse... With these weaps, you have to constantly keep hitting your opponent while dodging his attacks, unlike weapons like RL/Sniper/Shock-combo, where you just try to get him in one blow and if you miss, you run like hell and try again some other place (OK, many of you will not agree with this, but that's fine with me).
Don't get me wrong; I myself use these weaps all the time, but not I don't solely depend on them for RA. The only lame thing in RA (or any other form of FPS, for that matter) is using the same weap exclusively. That's like saying "I can't handle any of the other weaps, so I only use this one..". They put a whole bunch of weaps into the game and at least 5 of them could (and should) be used to kill your foe.
