37 bow, 39 weapon, 40 pathfinding, with the rest split between stealth and celtic dual depending on whether the ranger wants to lean towards "sniper" or "ginsu".
What does ranger auto-train in?
Recurve bow.

if the ranger is going to be your main and you are serious about DAOC. build your template around Stealth 33. (which yields 50 stealth at rr7)

Other wise it dont really matter what you specc its all pretty much the same.

Dont try to spec for solo-sniper, you may find a few templates still floating around, but essentially solo-sniper is a very poor spec nowadays.

Group-support rangers seem to be the fashion atm, high bow and high melee ability at the expense of stealth.

Rangers still need to spec bow, otherwise they are just very gimped BM-wannabees.

Stealth 33 is common nowadays.
Pathfinding is usually specced to the next dmg adder, kinda like a step (ie 21/27/36/46)
Maximum critshot is where some rangers now draw the line (ie minimum bow spec of 27)

I would suggest lvls of certain skills in this way:

35 stealth max
21 path min, 46 path max
27 bow min

It is really up to you.

do not spec 27 bow.

33 stealth
40 bow
17 cd
36 path
39 blade

is prolly the dog bollacks of a spec.

But i go 33 stealth 42 bow 11 cd 36 path 39 blade.
I still like double CS'ing mezzed mages for 1107.

Here's a curly for yuh

I'm trying something a bit different with my ranger.

Seeing how roaming around the frontiers stealthed is just begging to be ganked by any of the hundreds of roaming assassins out there, I thought 'why not just sacrifice stealth entirely, and see where we go as a spec'. The spec I came up with is:

Stealth: 1 (hur hur)
Pathfinding: 46 (highest dmg add)
Piercing: 39 (gives a good start-anytime 4-style-long chain)
Celtic Dual: 33 (Over 40% chance to double-hit, w/o extra skill points. Yummy)
Bow: 33

This would makes my ranger into essentially a really HARDCORE mage-equivalent. The bow would do close to mage-type ranged damage, while the RF armour, reasonable buffs and very prickly melee ability makes it a rather thorny prospect to take down in melee.

Obviously this means you can't solo in the frontier because you don't have the stealth - but this is pretty much a moot point with the assassins' ability to see you anytime anyway.

If they fix stealth, I may re-spec at 40. Otherwise the concept of something that kicks butt at range, and then continues to do some surprising damage while meleeing does appeal to me. Only lvl 11 at the mo, so I'll have to see how it turns out. There's always the chance to re-spec at 40 if I don't like it...

My spec is

38 Stealth
42 Recurve
30 Pierce
40 Pathfinding
10 Celtic Dual

0 pts left

Bow auto-trains to 12 at lv 50 - not worth doing imho unless you're guaranteed groups to 50.

about the stealthissue.. u dont really beg to be ganked unless u have too low stealth.. camoflauge worsk good.. i never get jumped by assasins before i see them while using camo..however its true that you have to be carefull while not having camo available

..but i wouldnt consider playing a ranger without stealth, if you gonna have the hell of exping a ranger u want to be able to solo some in RvR even if grping can be more fun most of the time

27 bow MINIMUM in case i wasnt clear. ;)

Lots of great specs listed here m8 from a few experienced Rangers.

Try em out on the character builder, see what each one gives you and im sure you will be able to decide on the spec you want.

One thing about stealth, if youre planning to go below 25 stealth, dont put anything at all, unless you have 45+ modified stealth people will see you from miles away, especially assassins(even without see hidden mind you).

The bow would do close to mage-type ranged damage,

you sure about that lol

(miss fumble pbt armour type, your average damage with bow would be around the same output as a warden)

just roll a BM with that spec.
