Random lock ups?

Been playing for a few months now and from time to time I just completely 100% lockup, not doing anythign special no patterns I can see just lock up, hard reset style.
I've got a 9800xt card with latest drivers, athlon clocked at 2ghz.
Any ideas?
It's not a heat thing I monitor the core temp from time to time, not a power thing I got a new PSU a couple months ago (I hope).

Just try the usual things mate - to keep your PC running sharp :

1) Defrag the hard drive
2) Run a full virus scan in Safe mode (update to the latest def's first)
3) Run a spyware scan (SpyBot or AdAware ftw)


Its strange how you get a complete lockup on your PC. Does it only happen in DAOC or is it even when you are surfing/playing music etc?. Does it happen after a certain amount of time playing games (processor load, HDD load = more heat) or if you leave the PC on tickover and go to work or something does it still do it?

Personally it sounds to me like a HDD issue - though I may be way wide of the mark.

Keep us posted on things after you have tried what I wrote above.

Oh and another thing worth checking is the Windows Event Viewer - that might give you some clues on what is failing.

Start -> Run -> then type 'eventvwr' (without the quotes) and press Enter

Look in the System and Application areas for any errors (red circles with white crosses) that might be the same times as the lock-ups... might give us more of a clue why it is happening.

give more info about the lockup, does the pc power down? bluescreen? frozen screen? black screen?
give as much details about everything you can...

sure sorry i know my description was vague, lockups come in all flavours
only happens when camelot is running, most of the time its a complete 100% lockup forcing me to hard reset, sometimes its camelot crashing and freezing but i still have control over my pc and can alt tab and close game.dll from the applications menu, and on rare occasions its a blue screen.
most, but definately not all of the time, i may have one or two browsers up on this forum and elsewhere, alt tabbing between downtime, and sometimes i have iTunes running.
never happens during an alt tab though, its mostly just after ive pulled an orangecon mob
i dont see a pattern to the lockups as just crafting sometimes freezes up, just whacking 1 every 40s whilst watching tv, nothing else running in the background.
i use Ad-Aware from Lavasoft every week or so and have constant realtime virus protection or whatever it is, defragged a few weeks ago out of sheer boredom one night strangely enough too.

also if i am surfing in the background i never crash whilst looking on the web, its always whilst playing the game

how many other games then daoc do you play? try running some sort 3D gfx stress test.

not got any other games on the system apart form Camelot. Used to play Dawn of War and Planetside a lot before this though and don't recall such problems.
Any ideas for a stress test?
