GOA did state that there was going to be some maintenance work last night.. maybe these are the remnants thereof?

The maintenance last night was entirely finished within an hour or so. There are no reported issues with the servers. Any problems are likely to be with transient internet conditions.

You smell!!

It was probably my connection as it was acting up a bit anyway but if you blame the servers then 9 times out of 10 you're right :D

check yer network card drivers or settings - that is what normally causes these type of problems.

Start > Run > ping www.google.com -t

It'll start sending back pings. If they start to show "request timed out" as you go linkdead, its a problem either with your PC or your internet connection. If they are still going when you go linkdead, then its another GOA fuck up.

Not true because the ports and routing to reach our servers are different to the ones you'll use when pinging google.

If there was a server problem that was causing people to go LD, it would affect everyone regardless. The problem faced by the poster above who goes LD within a minute of logging in is either going to be because of an underspec PC which can't render all the textures in time to respond to the server, or an issue with his network card.

There is a common problem with certain network cards where the checksum of all packets is processed by the card itself rather than the CPU. When running webservers or very high traffic networks this saves some time and improves the network performance slightly however it also causes problems with some packets for online gaming. For general surfing, normal amounts of downloading/uploading or gaming, this option is not required and will make no difference to the performance of your connection. Look on the properties page for your network card and see if there is an option called 'Hardware Checksumming', 'Checksum Offload' or the like and disable it.

It's only a general rule of thumb for simple NIC problems and testing his Internet connection.
