Hmm

RAM Prices in the UK have rocketed recently. They'll come down again soon, though. If you're not in the UK you might still be effected. Prices fluctuate depending on what's going on in Silicon Valley, California. Last year somebody over there blew a fuse in a toaster and the cost of RAM shot up by 23%.

To answer your question - RAM generally goes 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB and so on. On the whole it's usually best to ditch your existing RAM and just use new RAM. The reason being is that all your RAM will function at the lowest 'universal' speed. If you've got a slow 64MB (which you probably have) and you buy fast 256MB then all 320MB of your memory will run as slow as your slowest memory module. Get it?

Therefore in most cases whip out your existing slow memory and just have less overall, but faster memory for best results.

Depends on what type of motherboard you have as to what RAM you can buy. EDO ram (old type) has to be installed in pairs. SDRAM (more common for newer PCs) does not. Need to check. What type of processor have you got? That'll help identify the type of motherboard and therefore, RAM you need.

No, it isn't complicated to install. If you can install a PCI card, you can install memory. Just follow the instructions... use slot 1 first.

Whereabouts in the world are you? If in the UK I would wholeheartedly recommend Scan for anything PC related you might need. Check out their Today Only for best prices.

Phew. My brain hurts.

That'll be £50 consultancy fee, please.

Funny, I've not noticed any change in the ludicrously low prices for some time now.

256MB 184Pin DIMM PC1600 DDR RAM ECCUnbuffered CL2: £52

Er, thats not rocketing by any means of the word :)

Yes it is. Although my P3 runs at 133.

And TUG - Most Athlon systems should have memory running at 133. Only the AMD Irongate 750 chipset didn't allow for 133 MHz memory speed.

I thought that some celerons ran at 100 too. But is that just cos my friend overclocks?

This is true as I have one myself, which is probably why I forgot to put it down.

Well, I have two 100mhz 700's on a VP6 actually :)
