Does seem like a lot of anger is directed towards this game, but then again JC hasn't made anything that great for a good few years once the competition over took him.

I saw it at the eurogamer expo a couple of weeks ago and was very underwhelmed. Clunky, clunky, clunky.

They only had the 360 version running but I played it for a bit and just found it frustratingly dated already. Doom3 style graphics with a slight tweak.

And the oddest, most annoying thing? There were some skulls hanging down from the ceiling but they didn't move when shot. Silly I know but I mean for someone like "id" I'd expect a lot more from a game engine given how interactive things are these days.

tbh ID have been slipping in recent years

"Oh look , another ID corridor shooter, but with slightly bigger corridors" allow me to be totally underwhelmed

Probably not the most popular opinion but I believe ID got lucky with Doom/Quake as they had virtually no competition in the genre, both games were pretty mediocre.

ID have done nothing of any note since, actually pretty much every game since has been terrible.

I would agree. QuakeWorld/Quake was their pinnacle, ever since they have gone downhill.

q3/ql still the leader in competitive FPS shooters, pretty hard to ignore that people are still competing for big money in a game a decade old. That's impressive.

Q3 I enjoyed but more for the mod aspect of it. Freeze Tag, Proball, Instaunlagged.

Pretty sure I ended up on BW because I played in the Proball league.

First post in 5 years o/

I just completed this. Don't bother buying it ever tbh.

You can stop reading now unless you're interested - I'm just going to rant about why the game is naff.

<rant>

It's a real shame as the game had a lot of potential in the very beginning. For the first hour or two I thought I was in for something awesome.

It started out as just what I'd been wanting from a game: I like shooters and I used to love games like Fallout, but I don't have the time or energy with work. I've tried to play both FO3 and New Vegas and I seem to just get disinterested with all the travelling and faffing about. Rage starts out like a cut-down, faster-paced version of Fallout with plenty of action. And the action and everything is pretty cool.. It seems like they had a pretty clear concept in mind..

Then it just.. goes on.. and it seems like they stopped trying.. imagination fails.. and then it ends. And you barely even realise that it was going to end.

It becomes obvious id couldn't be f***ed with a real story, nor making what was happening in their story really match up to what you see on the screen: The story is all about big-scale Resistance vs. Authority HL2-esque stuff, but in reality you only ever encounter about 20 "Authority" soldiers in total throughout the game, and in between missions they don't really seem all that bothered that you're blowing all their shit up (which is extra odd, as they appear to only possess about 3 things).

It feels very flat. It's strange.. It seems like iD built this big, open world with a big plotline, then gave up trying to fill it or make it in any way interesting or believable. Instead it's just filled with a collection of cardboard cut-out, cliched characters you barely interact with. It's like they were trying so very hard to stand out and not be Fallout, that they quite literally cut out ALL the detail.

The ending is quite possibly the biggest disappointment in a game I've ever experienced.

The mission is a complete cakewalk thanks to a chap you barely know tapping you on the shoulder and saying "Here, have this BFG I found. Bye." Then when you hit the final (dull, green) switch with little to no dramatic build up or effort required to reach it, cue a 5 second cut-scene (no exaggeration, it's 5 seconds long) and then the screen goes to black and the credits roll..

You literally don't even realise you're finishing the game and then the credits are up.

When you've finished the main storyline, that's it - you can't go back and play about in pretty empty huge open world they've created, and the few open world "jobs" and races that are left.

Which to be honest is a blessing, because they were all shit.

And then there are odd things to collect that just don't make sense: meteor crystals that you're told at the beginning "Never trade or sell unless it's for something very valuable" - yet there is in reality nothing whatsoever to do with these items. You just sell them for $25 each. I can't help but wonder if someone in the office had a much grander, more ambitious vision for this game and then was told to shut up and behave. There are a lot of other examples in the game where it seems like someone started to add more detail, then cut it all back.

I don't like the level of effort required for customisation in Fallout. It's too much for me. Initially I liked Rage's simplicity, but you assume there's going to be more as you play on - until you realise that Rage reduces everything to console-kiddie town. For example, your body armour upgrade options to purchase as you progress from one stage to the next are "Light", "Medium" AND.. "Heavy". That's it. You buy them off some woman with stupid hair for a few dollars and you feel nothing. The future is dull.

Normal difficulty is a cakewalk, I kept expecting things to get harder, only they actually get easier and easier. What was initially awesome and made you feel like a powerful hero quickly makes you start asking "Wait, now I can blow up everything without even trying?" Which could be fun, only there's not even that much to blow up.

In summary, it's pretty clear somewhere along the line iD gave up, changed tack or just went mental. Either that, or they decided to make something they could kick out the door and onto consoles.

It's a real shame because the game started with a fair bit of promise. I think it was originally intended to be a lot more than it is. If they'd worked harder and filled out all that hot air with some real substance, it could have been a great alternative to big, open-world games like Fallout. Instead it's not. And it cost me money.

Let's not even start on the ridiculous effort they made with the multiplayer or their excuses for why they did that.

/rant over.

Soz if that's boring waffle, I'm just pretty disappointed in iD, I expected a lot more from them. More and more it seems Devs aren't really trying any more.

Ironically, I say that and all I really want is for someone(s) to remake a pretty version of Quake, Doom and C&C that runs on Windows 7.

'lo btw :D

iD only really did physics and nothing else. It would seem that little has changed. That's why Q3 and QW worked and nothing else has.

From about 2 minutes in, when you ride along in that guy's jeep and the direction of the jeep bears absolutely NO resemblance to the rotational position of the steering wheel (I notice things like that), it's clear that it is a lazily put together game and I didn't really lose that first impression tbh.

Was the steering broken as well? He did remarkably well to get to his destination if it was. :D

Although the way he was spinning the wheel around while going in a straight line, it might well have been. :(
