Radeon 9800 pro driver update problem

Whenever I attempt to update my Radeon pro with the latest ATI Catalyst drivers my system goes nuts on me... *sniffles*

I download the latest Catalyst version, uninstall my old drivers, install the new ones, restart - and Windows welcomes me with error messages and system performance goes down the crapper. Anyone else with the same problem?

System specs:
Shuttle SG51b
Pentium IV 2.66 ghz
1 gb Kingston RAM
9800 pro (doh..)
Win XP/SP2 (it happened on SP1, too)

Have you tried using ATI's driver removal tool first? Clean out all the old shit ATI stuff from your system then do a driver install.

Ahhh... no, I haven't. I thought a regular uninstall of the drivers would suffice.

I just finished sticking in a 9800 Pro, I let Windows XP do all the driver stuff, should I go somewhere to get better drivers ?

The Adapter Driver Properties report the driver files as being 6.14.10.x, this is my first ATi card, so I have no idea what the drivers should be.

My alternate drivers of choice are found at www.dna-drivers.nl
Works fine for the most part, whereas ATI's own ones, well, always works.
