Hi guys,

I just installed my new Radeon 9500 pro, new processor and the works and DAOC keeps crashing to desktop (no error msg). In addition, I cannot make 3D mark run past the second test (for those that might know of it).

Anyone got any ideas or if not, can you tell me what other info you need?

Heh, did you like the way I acted all serious like I knew what I was talking about then? I just shouted to my boyfriend, and asked him what it could be, and that's what he suggested.

If you can't work it out, try this forum too:

http://forums.barrysworld.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=96

It's the other technical forum here at Barrysworld, and they're a really helpful bunch. I'll try to get a link to them at the top of this forum at some stage.

does it crash past the second test or does it generate error messages saying your graphics card doesn't support a certain feature?

in the first case, Damini is highly likely right and it's overheating.
otherwise I'd suggest getting the latest drivers, reinstall them (remember first to install default VGA drivers, to make sure the drivers fully upgrade) and then reinstall DirectX

Ill try to remember:

I think its an MSI KT400 V-L motherboard (the one with the RAID) (I reckon its a VIA chipset).

I got some tips from here:

Some very helpful tips for anyone with problems like mine.

Had the same thing on my old GF3, would crash everytime on 3dmark second or 3rd test played most games but some kept crasing, i figure the card is fubar so i buy a new GF4, still same shit, after some extensive searching i found that there was a problem with my memory nothing to do with my vid card.

But before you start ripping yer box open install all the latest drivers, if that still doesnt work, seek profesional help :)

What wattage is your PSU? You might need to get a more powerful one due to the upgrades.

That fixed all my crash-y problems.

OK - here is the full story:

I have a athlon 2200 xp
MSI KT4 Ultra (VIA KT400 chipset)
Radeon 9500 pro 128mb RAM Graphics card.
512 mb 333mhz RAM

I've tried the catalyst 3.1 drivers, the ones that came with my card, the hyperion 4-in-1 drivers and so on but no joy.

Now, the game runs but shortly after entering, the display messes up. Lines start to draw from different parts of mobs etc. I can sit there and watch water for 10-15 mins no probs but as soon as i start to wander about i get problems.

I've knocked down my hardware acceleration one notch and it helps a little with the 3D Mark test but not Camelot 9im running SI now). Oh, and the mouse pointer flickers constantly.

I have been having similar-ish problems with my 9000 pro card which I only got this afternoon. Updating all the drivers, installing direct x 9.0 and uninstalling and reinstalling SI seemed to make a difference. I still get a few crashes here and there so I am doing a windows update at the moment to see if that helps.

Getting a new card is fun and frustrating at the same time. That is why I only do it once every 2-3 years. :)

400 watt sorry.

Its not a problem now for me I think - Im sending it back and getting a GEForce 4 instead.

One final question:

GeForce 4 Ti4600
or
GeForce 4 Ti4800SE

I have an x8 AGP m/board and the 4800SE is £50 cheaper.

Which one?

The ti4800 se is just a ti4400 with 8xAGP , the ti4800 is just a 4600 with 8x , clever marketing ploy. Im plumping for a radeon 9500pro which wets all over anything up to ti4600 and is £50 cheaper. Just hope there arent any driver incompatibilities which ati are famous for. Hope u guys with problems get it sorted soon. Can be very frustrating updating video cards.

Good luck with the new card. I am still struggling to make my 9000pro work properly. I will possibly try a reformat later on today to see if that will help. If not, then its back to the shop! Grr!

Was having a similar issue on my girlfriend's PC with a Radeon 9000. 2 reinstalls, 1HDD and switching graphics cards didn't seem to help. Had installed any and all ATI Catalyst drivers I could find, Via chipset updates, etc. We both have MSI KT400 Ultra boards.

Then I updated the BIOS...works like a charm now. Just a possible route to think about. If you've never done a bios update before, though, I recommend CAUTION!

The MSI live update program is pretty good and can help tons - it should be on the motherboard driver CD. It'll even create a BIOS rescue disk just in case you mess up and need to get your board back alive.

Hmm...the bios flash was something I had considered. I think I will do it now BEFORE I do a nasty ol' reformat.

Thanks for the little tip. :)

GAH! The bios flash didn't work either. Right, I am off to get my hair cut and then I will reformat this bastard and hope that it works. I am running out of ideas here. :(
