racist Nursey Rhyms

Spotted this on another forum , let me know what you think

I heard on the radio this morning, while en route to college, that the popular childrens song 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' has been now deemed racist, and hence forth should be sang "Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep". I mean what the fúck? I sang 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' when I was younger and I am not a racist. Does this also mean the the phrase 'the black sheep of the family' should be changed to 'the rainbow sheep of the family'?

This is in ireland , so i wouldn't be surprised at it at all.

i have a term of affection i use on people i started with , it's Monkey , i've alwyas used it and they use it back on me.

Now , one of the group happens to be black lad, anyway myself and himself where just saying ello and i said my usual "Morning Monkey" and he replyed back "Morning Mr. Monkey", we went on with our work , ok it wasn't work it was stuffing our facing with a nom noms fry.

I got called up to a meeting in HR later that day and was informed that i was to stop using racist comments. now i'm not a racist so i was shocked, i asked what incident where they refering too and sure enough it was from that morning breakfast incident. i explained as i have done here and the didnt' accept it saying i was encouraging racial hatred.

I was shocked so i went off and said i'd think about it. the follow up meeting was about 3 days later.

they asked would i be changing my attitude on this issue and i told them No, not a chance.

i explained that i refer to all my friends as monkeys, as no saine human would hang out with me. and that if i had to refer to my black mate as anything different it would be discrimination , and that was not something i would tollerate. I also informed them that EVERYONE on the floor where i work know that i only refer to the people i started with as Monkeys ( Monkey shot into space - we where the first to be trained for what we do) .so if they have a problem with the fact that i use certian words then they could write to the people who create the dicitonary and ask for the word to be removed.

They said i would have to get a verbal warning over this , I refused to sign anything , i escalted this up to the head guy in the building and explained that what they where asking me to do was to discrimitate one of my firends who happend to be black. I should also mention that my mate in question was shocked that they could even think such a thing about me , and that he found it all very funny ( esp as i kept getting dragged off into meetings).

in the end , They accpeted it once they where told by the big boss dude to drop it.

My little sister couldnt even do the nativity play at school as it would offend other religions. I mean thats mad mainly cause where she goes to school its in the country and the only other religion in that school is a chinese kid. Fucking crazy

the thing that gets me, i'm not racist btw, is if we went over to another country we would be expected to respect their religion and traditions and we would, but over here that isnt the case.

the question here is why they are using black wool, if they indicate its not as good as white wool then maybe their is a hidden message, yes its there but not there at the same time.

like i said, i dont know the full lyrics but i cant see where black wool and racism are linked.

Political correctness is not only stupid, but it's counterproductive. It just winds people up and makes them more entrenched in their views.

As for the phrase "Black sheep of the family" that has a very straight forward origin and is a classic example of how pc idiots totally f*cked up. Years ago black sheep were not as highly valued as white sheep. This was for the simple reason that while white wool could be easily dyed, black wool could not. So the "black sheep of the family" was someone who was not as highly valued. Of course the pc idiots put their own interpretation on it and made it a race issue - the irony was that nobody else had previously.

Its a tricky situation - for people on the inside looking out what they say to their friends isn't an issue , but the only problem is that either a) people who don't know them and therefore understand comments made could be offended (of any race) and b) there are a lot of racist people about like it or not and those people can sometimes use sayings/comments etc to cause offence where non should be meant - venemous use of phrases or even as an example baa baa black sheep - don't get me wrong - I see nothing wrong with the rhyme but some people can use it in an untoward way - I don't think the problem lies with the use of certain words but more the attitude of certain people and they need educating that we all live on the same big spinning piece of rock in space.. Eradicating certain phrases etc does need to be done - more so the offensive stuff like (and though i dislike using the word i have to use it here) ****** has to be taken out - though it doesnt help when rap artists etc confuse the boundaries by using the word themselves to refer to each other (though you could argue it is simply the first step in diffusing the word from being a harmful/spiteful one) but political correctness - now there are a bunch of people who should be more worried about children across the globe starving than offending someone with a nativity play etc - and the other worry I have is that the more politically correct society becomes - the more of a backlash there will be against it and in turn in itself could spawn more racism and small minded'ness..

but yeah i can see where these people thought they where doing somethign good, but then i can equaly see that it's just plain stupid , the black sheep reference referes to the economic hardship that a farmer would have in trying to do anything other than Cull a black sheep.

edit: added in quote, and no way is the phoenetic alphabet being changed where i work, we even made our own (which we dont use in practice btw)
