If all things are equal then governments will seek to draw more power to themselves - politicians seek power - they dont neccesarily see it in those terms - they might say -'I really want to do something about anti-social behaviour etc.' - but instead of addressing causes its easier to just knock up a bunch of new restrictions.
The decline in civil liberties has gone on since the aftermath of the second world war - at that time people really got involved in politics because they wanted to make the country into what they had fought for.
Ever since this peak people have gradually lost interest in politics - without participation and scrutiny from the populace the government can gradually encroach with less and less backlash.

I did NOT make this personal and my post wasn't targeted at any single forum individual. So I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't direct personal insults at me for merely suggesting that we are a little censor happy.
edit: Will only did what he did because that's what's expected of him. I'm pretty certain if there was no CoC the link would still be firmly fixed on page 1.

Hehe, best to speak one's mind and no im not a terrorist!!, but 90 days to complete as case?
All i've heard from the propoganda machines is that the Police and CPS want 90 days, as this would best serve to protect us. But why 90 days? give me an example. Would 90 days have stopped the 7/7 bombings? the failed bombings? I see it as a measure where the police have a small suspicion that someone might be planning something so its best to remove them from their lives for 3 months, just like they had a suspicion that that brazialian bloke was a suicide bomber. Or that frenchman, and what about all those people we heard were getting arrested on the terrorist laws, how many of them have been charged? Last i heard it was dismally small, Well forgive me if I don't trust the police anymore. With this law they could essentially arrest whole groups of people and hold them for 90 days without charge "looking" for evidence. 3 months is a long time your life would be ruined, jobs, family life etc.

On the removal of the link, let me digress and talk about censor-happiness. I deliberately let the link stay so that I could see where forum self-moderation would go with it. I did voice my personal opinion however, and some agreed while others didn't. My first inclination was to remove it and go all fascist-mod at Tom, because it's my opinion that linking to such a website has no place in these boards. Discussing it -fine, linking to the site -not fine. I personally despise supremacist racism to the point that I even begrudge that website the few hits it got from the link here. Anyway, Will got there before me, but believe me I would have done the same. While in this particular case Will and I did not discuss this thread as we tend to do with things we're looking at in that respect, due consideration was given. We do not blindly jump on things we don't like, even when we'd really really like to. You know this as well as I.
On Will's removal of the link, yes, it is expected of him to look out for these things. It's also expected of me, as you may or may not know I've become a general forum mod after Deebs and Ted the Dog had a momentary lapse of reason, and I try to do a decent job of it when I'm able.
On CoC vs no-CoC, the point's a bit moot isn't it. We have a CoC, and love it or hate it it's there: users should abide by it and moderators have to look out for it. Such is life in these forums, though I would add that if we didn't have a CoC and I was still a mod that link would also have been just as gone as it is now.
This thread was on 4 pages when I last checked it, I come in today and it's up to 6 - I think "wow, there's bound to be some intelligent discussion/debating going on in there" (2 pages in a day is pretty gung-ho for this place). But no, it's just TdC and Will flirting with each other.
