Read this in the paper last week:

The idea is that these three questions are as useful in an interview situation as the whole experience/qualifications stuff. It's supposed to tell you about the attention to detail and thought processes of your candidates etc. it's bollocks really but a nice little test. Try and do it honestly (i.e. take them as read - they aren't trick questions) and answer using the spolier tags. There's no shame in getting these wrong:

A bat and ball cost £1.10 in a shop. The bat costs £1 more than the ball. How much is the ball?

If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how many minutes would it take a 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

A lily pad is on a lake and doubles in size every day. After 48 days the lily pad covers the entire lake. How long does it take for the lily pad to cover half of the lake?

cheers

I provide workings, I should get more marks!
1) Ball = X, Bat = Y
X + Y = 1.1 (Both cost £1.10)
But Y = X + 1 (Bat is £1 more than ball)
X + (X + 1) = 1.1
2X + 1 = 1.1
2X = 0.1
X = 0.05
Thus ball = 5p

2) 5 Machines take 5 Minutes to make 5 Widgets
so it takes 5 minutes for 1 machine to make 1 widget thus it will take 100 machines 5 minutes to make 100 widgets, so 5 minutes.

3) If it doubles each day, and today it covers 100%, then the day it was 50%, was yesterday as 50% * 2 = 100%
Got any more of these? :)

you may be able to "prove" it's 5p through algebra but you've placed the question in a real life situation and you can bet your arse the shop keep will tell you to take a flying jump if you try and purchase the bat for a quid and the ball for 5p.

Logic sometimes makes no sense.....

Yes it does
£1.05 minus 5p equals £1; the price difference between bat and ball. On first glance you want to say, bat £1, ball £10p, but that would be a difference of 90p...

Got 2 and 3 right but cocked up 1. :mad: Ah well, just goes to show that I won't do well in a job interview if I turn up in my jimmy-jams still rubbing the sleep from my eyes.

It does,
something along the lines of £1.10 = X + (X + £1.00) because the wording is "one pound more than" so the bat is the value of the ball + £1
, bit of a wank one though imho.

Even with a diameter or 1mm when it starts it will be approximaely

281474978km in diameter by the end of 48 days ;)

Which is approximately twice the distance from the earth to the sun ;)

That's one big space lilly!
