So i've decided to quit smoking, I know some people here have quitted can you just confirm that the first 24 hours is like hell on earth!!!!

Last night i had a terrible nights sleep, cold sweats, feeling hot, then cold, and just generally feeling crap and now i have a cough comming on. Have bought some of those lozenges since the going cold turkey was just asking for trouble.

Also any tips and ideas?

yeah, getting a cold sounds reasonably familliar. stick with it though matey, you'll feel a *lot* better after a while. I know I did.

may be a good idea to start thinking of something to do that doesn't involve smoking for when you get 'the urge'. take walks, go to a gym, etc. and you will get the urge to smoke, trust me. it takes a while for the monkey to die. just be strong and aware of what is going on.

I still get an occasional twinge, and I quite 10 years ago!

anyways, good for you!

if you think after one day is bad.. w8 until you hit the 3 week barrier.. thats when the nicotine is near the end of getting outta ur system. its the hardest part. but if you can get through that part (i did) (2 years clean now :D) then you should be home free.

be careful around smoking friends if you are drinking cos chances are u will accept a ciggy without thinking. ur friends wont do it on purpose (at least i hope not) but by now its prob second nature to offer u.

GL and keep us posted on a day to day diary :D ;):fluffle:

Or don't quit, you'll die anyway and "death sticks" probably ain't the cause.

Good luck, but i'm betting on a relapse that you WON'T tell about.

EDIT*** oops.. just noticed this thread is 2 years old.. lol.. u still smoking or are u clean

Nope, that would be the join date :D

All I can say is keep going. Both JBP and I gave up on July 4th this year. We used a nicorette aid which we could inhale when we needed to for one week and then did the rest ourselves.

I found I was really really ill for a while but I feel very much better now. You will notice some funny things happening to your body however if you read any site on giving up smoking they will tell you what your body is going through and why things are happening.

As for now 99% of the time even when stressed I don't think about having a cigarette, however the 1% is quite difficult but managable.

3 years and 7 months for me... and that was after 19 years of smoking!

My tips would be:

avoid pubs...in fact avoid alcohol as your self control goes out the window
avoid friends who smoke for the first month
visit a cancer ward in your local hospital
dont pay any attention to Bodhi;)

Yes ignoring Bodhi is key,

Have a headache and generally feel crap, but then in the long run its worth it. Have been smoking 5 years but just having the withdrawl symtoms reinforces how much smoking mess's with the body.

Im not going to go out for a month, although i am dreading new years so will go out with people i know don't smoke.

I've recently stopped smoking (not fags), and I found stopping, rather than quitting, is much easier. Its a different mental take on the situation.

Yup, but once your past that its actually a good thing.

Did you put yourself through that for nothing? Nope, so dont go having a cig now or youll just have to do it all over again!

Also any tips and ideas?[/QUOTE]Dont give up giving up after a year. Its silly :(

Hey, well whaddaya know? I quit smoking ciggies completely about two weeks ago now. Basically on the grounds that smelly clothes and nicotine fingers just weren't worth a fiver.

Except I went cold turkey. I smoked ten a day after moving on from social smoking, mainly because of the work I'm doing. I have felt urges, and have had about three dreams thus far in which I've had a smoke, but all in all, I haven't felt that bad really.

By the way, the nicotine leaves your system after 48 completely, not three weeks.

Oddly true, I became bored with smoking and just... stopped.

I didn't miss anything, unlike my previous attempts to 'quit'.

Well im getting all fluey, as in proper flu so the urge to smoke just isn't there since i feel to crap and know that having a fag would make me feel worse. Lucky break!... i guess....

Flu sucks... and im bored of lieing in bed feeling ill.

So you're sticking to the fags at least, some regular exercise is good :)

I saw the topic title and though it was about avoiding trem's penis.

eurgh,,, still haven't had a ciggy but main reason for that is that the Flu is painfully gay.....

Although today i fell that i can at least spend the day playing games instead of lieing in bed feeling bored.

Thats what my mum says!
If you're well enough to play games, you're well enough to go to lessons!
Sadly, since starting uni, I find myself telling myself that as if I miss a lecture, it usually takes more than double the acctual lecture time to catch up :S

but seriously, i smoke at uni and i dont smoke at home at all

and ive never noticed any ill effects when going 'cold turkey' at home in the holidays.

same happened back at school since i started about 5 years ago.

but i dont exactly smoke much even at uni, like between 1 and 4 fags a day unless i go out when it might be like 10-15 in a night.
