Quiet Athlon XP Cooler

My current cooler is huuuge and sounds like a jet engine. On top of that it no longer seems to be cooling very well since it now kicks off my CPU warning temperature beeper (set at 65 C) if I have the FSB higher than 100. Having to under-clock is not helping my PC very much. I also have to keep the case open or it overheats :/

My CPU is an Athlon XP 1800+ and my mobo is an Epox 8KHA+ iirc.

Can someone recommend me a new cooler ?

Also why would my old one not be doing it's job ? The fan is still spinning.

bah :(

Globalwin apparently have a reputation for producing loud fans and every time I mention them people laugh at me.

I Can assure you the fan I am about to list is both cheap and quiet (so quiet that I had to check to make sure it was actually working) also it is effective as my CPU rarely goes over 40.

The page below contains a description and feedback from people who use this heatsink/fan :)

OR get a 60mm to 80mm fan adaptor and an 80mm fan, same or more air, less noise.
Also worth checking that all the usual areas (intakes, fans, HS) are free of dust.
(cheaper than Zalman)

A Zalman would be what you are after.

Dust in the fan?

Hmm, it looks a little dusty but not hugely so. Maybe I haven't looked close enough ?

Still makes a racket though :)

More than it used to? If so then the fan needs replacing, they can be re-lubed but not worth the effort.

What paste should I use ?

I've never actually fitted a HSF to an Athlon before. How does one go about it ? My current on is one of those beasts that you have to screw to the mobo. I take it all these you have recommonded are clip jobs more like the old S370 ?

when you buy a zalman they give you an ickle tube with some paste. it works well enough. just a little dab right on the core, then scrape the excess off with a razor or something. try for a very thin, even layer.
it also comes with a very clear and precise little booklet detailing everything you have to do. be firm, but gentle. just like with the missus :)

Should just screw onto the heatsink. And you should just be able to buy the fan. The only complex part is whether to seat the fan to blow down onto the heaatsink or blow up. Ime sucking up is best.

Now, the athlon heatsink clips on and is a different kettle of fish. In my case I found a spare change of undies was required to change the heatsink as you need to press down on the clip hard with a screw driver to remove it. As you can imagine, one slip, and youll need a mobo as well as a fan. In fact, I would unmount the mobo to reduce the chance of a slip or cracking the board under pressure :/ This shouldn't be neccessary tho.

The thermal goop that comes with it is fine but Artic Silver 3 (AS3) is better. The Zalman is a good HSF that doesn't generate too much noise but it is important to clean HSFs as dust can act like insulation, this is made worse if you smoke etc by your machine.

I bought a nice copper q-tec one for a tenner, pretty darn quiet, and my OC'd XP has never been above 45oc :D

You can get specially modified silencers for your fan. They are called "Pillows" which are nice and fluffy.

I have the Zalman - virtually silent on slow spin.

Domin8or: since you've had a tantrum on another thread about useless replys, you've felt the need to join 'em?
