I'n totally not a car person, as long as its got 4 wheels and moves then thats ok isnt it??????

So im looking to get a runaround, and ive seen a Rover25 (02 plate) in a garage round the corner from me.

Its a reputable garage and ive had a chat with the owner but what are peeps general impressions of Rovers

It's 02 plate, 1.4 engine, and the thing that most drew me to the car was its had one elderly owner, who used it to pootle to the shops and back so its only done 19750 miles!!!

Apparently there were problems with the engines when these cars were initially released, but the guy at the garage says this ones been recalled etc and had the cam belt and cylinder heads replaced with correct doodads

Just do all the usual checks.
No water in the oil and vice-versa, no obvious leaks and check it both ways on full lock full for major rumbling and knocking, it shouldn't have either if it has been driven nice.

Check dipstick and filler cap for lots of white sludge (water in oil)
Take off rad cap if it has one and check for oil floating on water.
Take off oil filler while running and check there isn't a lot of air blowing out
(piston rings worn)
make sure engine warning light goes out.

Don't buy a Rover.

Company went out of business for a reason :)

My tip for someone who doesn't give a fuck about what they drive would be to work out how much you can afford, add several hundred quid and then find the most reliable car in that price range.

Perfect, they nearly always have been driven to the shops by old ladies or men in flat caps, you won't see them in fast car magazine.

There's a way to check if the car has actually done the recall or not, through some government website. Unfortunately I forget which one, but I'm sure some car head will know.

You can get some crackin cars for around £2000-2500. I got a fiat punto 2 years ago in like August.

It's had a new battery and a new exhaust. I've done from 17,000 - 71,000 miles in this time. Great runabout.

Rovers are a joke, if you want a cheap and reliable car buy a Skoda (waits for a smartasses comment from daveyboy)

That'll be a K-series engine, which are well known for head gasket problems. My advice would be to look elsewhere, there are plenty of cars around that price bracket. The Rover 200 was always overpriced anyway, and even as a facelifted 25, it was pretty ancient at that time.

Oh and the mileage is utterly irrelevant, you should buy on condition only. I'd rather have something that's been on the motorway every day, than something that's been to the shops and back every day. Think where the most wear and tear occurs.

Exactly, high mileage motorway driving is miles better than some car which has clocked up the same mileage driving lots of urban miles.
