Quake 3 with Win 2000

I ve been thinking of making win 2000 my main OS. I have it installed in dual boot with win98, but its on a second, older hd. Ive tried Q3 with it, and notice that while the benchmark results seem to be some 10% slower (P3-600 with Geforce ddr) that "in-game" it just seems noticably smoother for some reason ?? I know this is bizarre but while with win 98 my demo bench scores are on a par with similar systems Ive seen on the web, when actually playing I get huge peaks/troughs in performance. With win 2k I dont seem to get this - its particularly noticable with Ra3 map 4 for example, in win 98 the frame counter can go from 100 to 25 in the blink of an eye, with win 2k it is generally far more stable. Is this something that anyone else has noticed? Do you recommend win 2k in general? If so I may promote it to my main hd.

I used to do the same Dual boot cause of W98 fallin over all the time, but now just run W2K only.
Everything works fine with no noticible difference in frame rate from 98.
Im using Detonator 3 running on P3 550 with GF2 GTS.
and as you say, if anything its smoother than 98.
Word of warning though !!!
This only applies to Intel Chipsets !
There is a problem with W2K + VIA Chipsets (ie ATHLON)+ Quake3 apparently ? Anyone else had this problem ?

Hmmm,

maybe its confined to athlons, cos my mobo is a soyo via based one and its fine. Come on anyone else - share you win2k/q3 experiences here before I make a mistake i will regret!!!!!!

Depends on what you moved from -> to :D

Requiem, Ta for the url, it looks quite useful.

Anyway, upon much searching of the web it seems that I am not alone in this phenomena of having slower bench results but seemingly faster in-game play with win 2k than 98/95. I think I will change fully to win 2k.

Seems a lot of peeps also claim the same phenomena with the V5500 vs GF2. Hmm pity, if this were true...

Q3 and WIn2k work great on my PC (ASUS K7V Athlon 700)and I don't really notice any drop in performance from when I ran Win98.

The smoother game could be attributed to Win2K's better process management - it's altogether a more stable OS than 98 ever was/will be :)

I'd definitelty recommend dumping 98 for 2K

Ta m8,

Im currently in the process of upgrading - my win 98 installation was long overdue a format & reinstall anyway - might as well make it win2k :D
