I have often wondered if playing quake 2 via modem to modem would feel better without the lag of a server.

so if any one feels at a loose end one rainy sunday afternoon and would like to give me a game then let me know by emailing me at xxxvi@psamson.freeserve.co.uk

alos if you have a copy of hornets nest or doom2 then the same thing applies

regards

Lag?

I may be wrong here, but from general knowledge: I think that even if you do play a modem 2 modem match. You are still going to get the same amount of lag as you would do on a public server (If not more). But the person who is running the server will have a 50 ping (Should be lower the faster the computer) So, there is going to be a huge advantage to the player who is running the server who will now be an LPB :)
So anyone who wants to play jessica69 with a 200 ping while she has a 50 or lower ping. Then please send her an e-mail :)

There are two ways of conecting "modem to modem".

One of you can setup your machine to accept incoming calls and offer a network connection, and then the other can "dial in" to them .. tbh, I'm quite techy and I wouldn't fancy the challenge of getting this working, plus the fact that it'll be quite expesnive unless you live locally to each other.

The second option is both connect to the net, one of you run up a server and then give your net facing IP to the other, who can connect normally.

The second option is perfectly workable, but there are some caveats (I've done it, so I know)

1) on a modem you won't really be able to have more than 1 other player connected (on ISDN, you might be able to squeeze up to 3 or 4 players if you dual bond).

2) The connecting player will still have lag. It can be reduced by both dialing into the same ISP, but it will be quite noticable (i.e. the same as on a net server)

3) The player on the server will be pretty much lag free (ping probably around 10 in game), although his box will be doing slightly more work, so it should generally be the better spec'd of the two.

The big advantage is that you have complete control over the server .. mod, maps, settings, everything. This can be a great bonus when playing with a mate because you can choose to do whatever daft stuff you want.

Done this a couple of times with a m8 meself but did not work to well for me .( see setting up a Q2 server from previous posts ).
Also tried with both of us using the same isp but kept getting kicked when i tried to join the server he set up for some reason .

I've done it loads of times in the past.
Modem-Modem isn't that hard to figure out, there's a lot in the Resource Kit on the Win98 CD just about everything about connecting 2 Win98 platforms.
That was back when everyone I knew were paying through the nose on 0845 isp's so it made sense to phone each other (half's your phone bill).
Stability was fair to middling, some times it was perfect sometimes shite.
I used to run Deathmatch maps with LTK bots and have a mate phone me at home and join in...one on one was fun but it's a pain in the arse being the one phoning. You get the phonebill and the high ping.
