Quake 2 console backgrounds

Having tried to make a console back I've discovered that Q2 pallettes are very wierd indeed

Is there anyone who could help me or give me advice on creating one?

Have you unpacked an existing conback and had a look at it?

If not, grab a copy of something like pak explorer (find a link on the right hand side of http://www.powerslave.net/) and extract pics/conback.pcx and pics/conchars.pcx

They use the same palette .. note the background colour for conchars.. it's transparent. Having parts of your conback transparent doesn't work too well, although having a fully transparent conback is generally okay.

Only thing I can think of noting is that most of the time you only see the bottom half of the console so put all the interesting bits there (my conback, hastily knocked up, has a picture of our skin on it .. and the head is chopped off because it takes up > 50% of the height. doh.)
