Q3 and conn speed

I'm pretty new to Q3 and i'll currently just trying to get used to the gameplay and the weapons (Q2RG -> Q3RG is not easy

). Anyway i was playing last night with a few other players all of whom were HPW's (like me) and actually getting into the game. Then a LPB joined the server. This caused an outcry by the other HPW's on the server who then all left.

Is a good conn more of an advantage for Q3 than for other FPS's ? I have to admit that i couldn't tell, mainly due to the LPB being a damn good player aswell as being an LPB, but i'm curious to what other people think.

Can't promise this is true, just passing on the rumours and thoughts that I've heard from other people ...

Q3a has a lot of client-side prediction in it which try to 'compensate' for your connection .. more lag = more prediction .. and I gather a lot of HPBs find this annoying, especially when faced with an LPB who doesn't have so much prediction done for him and therefore has more control.

I think the idea behind it was reduce the effects of lag and the chopiness of modem conns, but I gather the upshot has been to make the game feel like it's being played with boxing gloves on

I'm not HPB and I don't know the insides of the code, so this is only stuff I've heard .. make up your own mind as to whether it's true or not.

i started playing online fps on Q3 (belive it or not i had never played q\qw\q2\tfc etc !)using a modem, then swapped to isdn, so heres what i think .......

i dont think that ur ping is as big a deal as some players make out - shock horror -, the improved stability of the connection IS a help though.

when i went from my modem to isdn i DID NOT turn into a great player - it certanly didnt hurt, but it didnt change me over night :{ - I Steadly improved as i played more quake :}

thats why it really pisses me off, when i join a server an a vocal minority start slaging me off because i do ok (to be fair, a lot these players also accuse me of cheating (which i dont), but thats a different story ...).

i think the simple explanation for the "precived" LPB benifit is that most lpb's ARE reasonable players, if u bear with me i can back this up .......................
..... if u are an lpb, the chances are that u are spending quite a few quid on it, so u have to be pretty much an hardcore gammer to have one

i also no plenty of hpw's who are really good players and are quite capable of beating most lpbs :}

and for a final thought ....

u ever noticed that the crap low ping player with a frag score of -3 is NEVER clled an lpb :}

One thing that has suddenly occured to me (and it now seems pretty obvious

) is that it very much depends on what sort of game you're playing. I used to play mostly (LM)CTF in Q2. There wasn't the extreme necessity for instant reactions there whereas duelling and standard DM make the ping advantage more obvious.

Being a ISDN user myself I find this topic quite interesting.

I played quake1 for about a year with a modem and found the ping to be fine, then just as I switched over to ISDN quake3 came along and i have finally found my game.

I love quake3, I like the ppl who play it but as I have progressed through the game something has become more and more obvious.

In the last test I had a ping of about 45 on a barrysworld server but the ones I usually play on are world servers especially german/europeon ones.
In the new demo my ping has increased to about 120 and a modem users ping has increased to about 300 mark!. I played quake3 on a 56k modem last night and found it almost unplayable, one minute u would be one place - the next somewhere else!.

Whats going on - it was never that bad in quake1, also in quake3 you will be hard pressed to find a server with less than 100 ping.

My final thoughts are the difference in connections, quake 3 has served extreemly well to highlight the difference in connections. I dont think its down to ISDN Vs Modem any more.
Now its ISDN/Modem Vs Cable modem/ADSL/2mb+ dedicated lines.
This is especially true of other countries, I was on a german server a few weeks back and most of the players had pings of 5-6!!!. They got a bit pissed off when I came second

To sum up there is a new breed of LPB and frankly its begining to seem like there are more of them than there are MPB's (medium ping bastards
