Q For Minstrals...

First let me say... as a Shaman in Midgard, i have alway had an acute hatred for Minstrals...

The flute sound gives me nightmares and rage at the same time... you just know, one destealthed to mezz you when you hear it...

<shudders>

Anyway...

Having decided to follow age old advice concerning warfare... i undertook the task of "getting to know your enemy"

Cue... "Helaina McMusicmaker" /leveled Highlander Minstral on alb Excal.

Currently...

Level 20

Instruments - 20
Slash - Rest of points.
(Stealth to be left till much much later)

I have to say... I have a new found respect for ALL mistrals now.

my god... that is the most AWKWARD, CRAPPY, CONFUSING control method i have ever seen...

Having to swap about instruments and stuff? And what the hell is with the charm thing?

OK, i need help/advice.

Am i speccing right?
PVE tactics?
How do i use the charm?... mobs keep turning on me.
Confusion insta? huh?

Help!

/respect to minstrals.

charm is a pulsing spell, so if you e.g. mez a mob while you have a pet you have to recast the charm on your pet.

Spec seems fine, keep Instruments at level for less resists.

The charm is resisted, because it's a 6s (iirc) pulse, sometime the mob resists, but the next pulse normally gets it back again.

Do remember, if you switch to another song (speed, power, heal, ablative, mezz), then the pet will be lost unless you twist back to the pet charm again - This is a complete pain to do.

I don't bother with pets most of the time, too much hassle ;)

The only benefit a Minstrel has over a sorc on charming pets, is you can charm a pet up to your instruments level (including bonuses), so a level 50 with 50 +11 Instruments, can theoretically charm a level 61 mob (with a lot of resists...)

As far as PVE goes, groups are a minstrel's best friend, soloing relys on getting a good pet and kiting the mobs all the time.

Speccing sounds fine ;) I think the usual way is to keep instruments at your level and stick the spare points into weapon, and then worry about stealth at 40+ unless you want to stealth in the battlegrounds.

Charm is a pulsing shout. So you shout once to charm the mob, and every 6s or so, a check is made as to whether the mob resists. (You will see a message if it does.) If it resists twice in a row, it'll attack you - don't panic, just hit charm a couple of times until it is recharmed.

Like any minstrel ability, you can't use any other power while charm is active without breaking it, unless you twist. ie. if you have a mob charmed and then you try to mez something, charm will break. Charm will also automatically stop any active song when you use it. (so, to twist charm and power: equip drum, hit charm, hit power song once, wait a few secs, then hit charm again, then hit power song again etc.)

Don't bother trying to charm anything above your level until you get to higher levels (I think the higher versions of charm give you a better chance of holding higher mobs).

Remember that some mobs will be able to do useful things like healing or nuking, a good way to solo as a minstrel is to grab a green con healing pet and just melee ...

Am i speccing right?

mentioned before: keep instruments to level all the way
spec slash till 29 and then decide if you wan to join stealth groups to get stealth to ~30 or spec weapon till the end (44-ish)

PVE tactics?

get a group and tank / play mana song + mez if no sorc around
your single line mez is not bad, make sure you use fairly up to level flute because material adds to mezz duration (up to 2 x delve or something like that). forget about aoe mez, its utter crap

when soloing, dont charm to high!. if mob resists the aggro table of the mob you were doing is reset and you have 2 mobs on you. Using a buffbot on your charmed mobs is great. i have seen yellow con pets kill purple mobs due to no cap on pets and con adding to absorb

How do i use the charm?... mobs keep turning on me.

get instruments as high as possible and recharm when it breaks. resists are a pain

Confusion insta? huh?

dont ever use it in a group unless you wat to piss off the rest of the group ;)

have fun, mincer is a fun class to play

Confusion can be good the times when everything went completely haywire and the mob just *don't* wanna get off the cleric. oO

Nah, confuse is usually for when the main tank is down, or tanks are on low health, but the mob is nearly dead. It'll keep aggro bouncing around a bit while you kill it.

Confuse _is_ pretty uber with a PBT in group.

charming sucks at lower levels for some reason.. even if you can get it capped... at 50 however, you can keep redcons easily with 50+14 instruments or so...

Ugrat, fair play to ya for actually trying one. So many come out with the 'nerf minstrels!' crap without ever trying to play one. The whole instrument swapping is a pain in the arse, charm is a mess and will often fail right when you need it most. Add to that the pet interface for the entire game being a clunky PoS. To be a minstrel takes patience but to be a successful minstrel takes patience and a lot of skill.

Patch 1.65F allows you to hotkey swapping weapons and instruments, so wont be as bad then

think both mincer + bard suffer interface problems

1.65 makes slots key bindable this will help

Having another equip slot for your 3rd instrument would be VERY nice. But that's a bit much to ask of mythic i guess :(. In the meantime just have the two instruments equiped that you think you'll use most often or need in a hurry.

Oh and on the plus side for mino's, remember you can run while casting your single (flute) mez, even while your run song is pulsing for a few last seconds. I've seen a lot of fellow albs do that while chasing middies back to MPK in thid :D

Anyone can play a minstrel.... play it bad or play it well..
Takes time to get used with all tools u have at disposal.
No matter the way u pick, to solo or group or both in RvR, u will always have more than 1 thing to do at same time. If u do all right, u will start to observe that enemy tanks will kill u 1st before of anyone else (sigh). If u are left last, means u are a poor minstrel (looks at gamah and blinks :p).
I dont care how peeps think i play my minstrel (and i mean albs cause they sook and i dont group with them anymore 4 teh win), but BO thinks i am good mincer ^^ :p (thx blejs and foadon, and fatality and my lil cute banan <put u at last cause u are the most cute of all and u have the gift to annoy peeps as much as me do^^ :p).
Evina RR5 (and stoped here, lvling my scout to 50 atm) minstrel, has spoken. Dont laugh, dont spamm, dont read. whatever. ^^
