Hi geeks :) Believe me I have tried, for weeks, and now its just a pain in the ass

My pc crashes too often, 1stly here are my main specs

AMD Athlon 1100 MHz Not Overclocked
Windows XP Pro
1x 40GB hard drive 1x 20GB hard drive
2x 256MB SD RAM 1x 128MB SD RAM
Soundblaster Live
Diamond Supra 56e Memory

Sometimes my pc can crash several times in 5 minutes. Crashing meaning freezing up on me, and if im playing any music i get a continuous split second of it.

This means I have to reboot thus intrupting and deleting any unsaved work.

I need any suggestions at all please as you can imagine, this is getting on my tits

Ask anymore questions you need to know

Thanx

First things first, this should of been put in the hardware forum.

Have you:

1. Reinstalled Windows
2. Striped down the PC and Rebuilt it

Not if you have the brains to change the way it looks, fairly easy really and as stated it like W2K works fine on my computer.

i have formatted and reinstalled windows but no luck

i remember having xp on ages ago, and i didnt crash like this....

but that was when i had 1x 20gb hard drive and 128 mb of ram,

could the problem be not enough voltage? or an unwaunted driver... ?

Simple because of loose connections etc overheating due to dust and old thermal paste etc etc etc.

I'm assuming your PC locks up for a second or two before carrying on, rather than actually crashing so you have to reset.

Check the System entries on Event Viewer at the times your PC locks up. Let us know what it says, or even better put the event ID in here or search the MS Knowledge Base.

My pc would crash, causing the whole machine to freeze up, thus manually rebooting my machine. So in the case of 'crashing several times in 5 mins'. I would reboot my pc several times.

im trying that event viewer btw, just need to figure out how to use it

best bet is to reinstall windows without ACPI - once XP/2K is installed with the ACPI version of the Hardware Abstraction Layer it's utterly impossible to remove and leave a stable platform... :(

when you come to reinstall windows make sure the system partition can be reformatted and force 'standard pc' instead of acpi when booting from the xp cd (from bios) tap f5 or f8 as the cd boots up to get the menu option (can't remember which)

ACPI is the spawn of the devil!

Gah! I had ACPI errors almost exactly as you. Flashing the BIOS sorted it. Good luck.

The program file BIOS-lock string does not match with your system

any ideas?

Sounds like you've downloaded a version for a different BIOS. What motherboard do you have?
