I always had a mind to read some of the widely known "classics" in English Literature, many are old and in the public domain and can be easily downloaded into a PDA.

Help me construct a list of such "classics", but make sure you follow these rules:

  • You've read it, you can state if its any good, please give a short opinion.
  • It's in the Public Domain, i.e. free. Be careful there are many "classics" that do not fall into this category.
  • It's a "known" book, not some obscure novel.
  • It must be in English, or have a reputable English translation.
  • Try to stick to proper novels, rather than plays, poetry, reference, essays, political tracts, etc

To start, I can list a few I have read:

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, I re-read after doing at school, tough going
Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell, both excellent, recommended
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - excellent, highly recommended
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - not bad, recommended

There are probably a few more, I'll try and think of them.

Next on my list is Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka :)
