Public Admins?

I asked this a very long time ago but at the time none were needed. I feel that now with the demise of my home at NGUK and the fact that BW will become busier - its time to ask again.

I enjoy keeping servers lamer free and am finding it real difficult to adjust to having to select "vote to kick" every time I find some dickhead TKing or raping his own base.

Who do I ask about becoming a BW Public Admin?

officially you have to be invited, but im sure you can always ask one of the liasons.

Public server admin is invite only - you can find us however in #bwtl or #barrysworld on irc.barrysworld.com.

1. Don't expect to be given any preferential treatment as you were a NGUK admin.
2. Don't expect to be treated harshly as you were a NGUK admin.

:D

Have a word in irc mate - we only use people well known to BW etc etc yadda yadda - just have a chat.

Mantis I think you put your finger straight on the main problem when you say you reach for the kick-button when you find some-one being a llama.....

What you HAVE to do is warn them 1st that what they are going is unaceptable and only then kick if they carry on.

What some NGUK admins had a habbit of doing was:-

a) Kicking anyone who did something they did'nt like. eg Fatgit being kicked for spamming the enemy flag area and being kicked for killing an nguk admin as he was about to cap.

b) Swapping their friends onto their own team and and moving the n00bs on their team to the oposition.

c) Not bothering to act on IRC requests to join a server and do something about the TKer who keeps coming back after his kick expires and presedes to satchel his own gens/team for the 40th time that night.

So mantis I hope you will understand when the rest of us are a 'little' wary of the spread of "nguk" admin culture onto barrys.

Apart from Torque who has some kind of NGUK phobia.

The "reach for the kick button" was speaking figuratively. Note the part where I say "I find some dickhead TKing or raping his own base".

What weight would me warning somebody carry if I threaten to initiate a vote to kick them?

Nothing... They would mostly likely vote to kick me 1st.

As for you slagging off NGUK admins then I find your need to stereotype people quite insulting.

If somebody had a bad experience with an NGUK admin then the correct thing to do is report it and those people would have had their admin rights removed. Every single kick on NGUK had to be reported with WON ID number, time, server and reason. That was strictly enforced.

As for the "spread of nguk admin culture".

Some of my best online friends have been made through Admining for NGUK and in my oppinion BW only stands to benefit from gaining some of the most friendly and dedicated players around.

Mantis before you start to personally abuse me and misquote/misinterpret what I said please read what I wrote again. i said "SOME NGUK ADMINS" not all.

I previously posted the problems created by NGUK admins on the NGUK boards and asked for some action to be taken. This was greeted by some VERY infantile posts, a factor that stopped me and any other of the longstanding tribes community offering advice/assistance to nguk people.

If the truth hurts then tough. Having been a server admin for 2 years on tribes one for the Irish servers, the thing you learn at the start is NOT TO JUDGE THINGS AT 1ST GLANCE AND TO REACT WITH AN AUTO-KICK MENTALITY which unfortunatly was the rule rather than the exception for NGUK admins.

I suspect poor/non-existent training was the cause of this. Whose fault this was I don't know.

tbh mantis I thought you were one of the better admins they had. Howerver the fact that you did not notice any of the "bad practice" that was going on as far as nguk admining was going on does make me wonder.......

Mantis please go on other servers(barrys & Azeroth) and observe how their admins deal with problem players. If you look closely you will see that they do 2 things; 1. they go into OBs mode to see EXACTLY what is going on, something that is NOT always apparent while playing. 2. They warn the player concerned and only kick AS A LAST RESORT.

If you want to be a GOOD admin mantis I suggest you take these points on board rather than taking a KNEE-JERK reaction to any critism of what went on on now-dead nguk

Torque, perhaps you should re-read Mantis' post. Lack of training?! Wasn't Mantis clear when he said ALL kicks had to be reported? Don't you think NGUK would keep tabs themselves?

As for Barrys, they are good admins but I have seen them on occasion performing similar acts to those you held against NGUK. People going into obs before a kick, I've never seen that on ANY server. I've also found almost all servers (including BW) will kick TKers without a warning if they seen more than 2 teamkills by the person in a space of 2 minutes, warnings have little to no affect and just result in prelonged rubbishing of the game.

I think Mantis would take your comments a little more seriously if you actually didn't keep contradicting yourself. Do you think he's a good admin or not? your post seems to change it's mind on that and the whole manner seems to assume all of NGUK is 'bad'.

I'd also suggest that if you have issues in future with admins you may get a better reponse if you e-mailed them about it. I really don't think they'd take to kindly to being bashed in public on the forums.

I know that much of the T2 community, despite their joking, found the NGUK servers a great place to play and this could be seen by how active they were compared to other providers. I'm sure all the NGUK admins are already a little upset by having lost their servers, I don't think this is really the time for you to be making sweeping assumptions about how they were run.

Woah chill folks ! :)

First of all is it not about time we all forgot about the BW & NGUK thing ? Its been dragged on way to long I think for many peoples likings imo and really has no bearing on what Mantis is asking regardless of whether he was an NGUK admin in the past.

What has happened has been well documented already. I personally played on the NGUK servers whilst the BW servers were off the master list and had few problems, all the problems seem to arise on formus from isolated incidents:)

Anyway, as I think has been said, Public Admins are at present invite only. This is not meant to be construed as being "l33tist" (as some people may argue) nor being against less well know faces. It is merely a case of giving the privelidge to those that are known and respected within the BW community. (/me waits for cheesy comments)

I would suggest initially that if you are able to Mantis, is to pop into #bwtl and make yourself known to those that don't know you from the forums as not all players read them.

If there is a problem on any public server regarding TK'ing or cheating there will almost always be an admin in #bwtl that can assist.

I hope that this may provide you with a bit more clarity on the situation.

3 seperate admins, each time I reported to topbanana and was basically told to fuck off :p

As a pubby admin, I take great care to ensure a player deserves to be kicked before I kick em. They ALWAYS get a warning from me first, and I would hope all the T2 admins do the same.

Do this and you'll most probably be sorted. Ya won't get admin right off the bat cos most admins got where they are by getting noticed on the servers and in the community channels and that takes time, gl :)

Ta guys.

Sorry you had a bad time fatgit.

I know a few admins got slapped for kicking without warnings or good reasons etc but that kind of stuff was kept between the offender and the head admins. We didnt really find out much if anything about the wrong doings of others.

Mantis, like everything else in life the browner the nose the more power you have (look at tony blair ffs). I suggest you start kissin ass now dude, you may get to be pub admin in around 2 years, well thats how long it took sh33p anyway :)
