PSP 8.0 How do I..?

I'm taking some ebay piccies, smallish items, how do I lose the background?
So for example if a take the piccy with a blue background how do I lose the blue so I can only see the item? Is there a background colour that works best for this?
Once I've done this how would I then fill the background with black or white?

In photoshop I use 'replace background' to do this. It might be better just to take the picture against a white backdrop.

Just seen this post.

Sounds like what you're trying to do is set a colour to be transparent. This can be done in the 'Image/Palette/Set Palette Transparency' option.
Key shortcut is CTRL+SHIFT+V

You can just click on the image and choose what colour you want to lose, then move the remaining image around or paste into another image.

I figured it out, I flood fill and select item.
Simple when you know how!
