Buying a games console for my brother-in-law this Christmas. Not sure which one to get for him. He's into most type of games except sport. What would you recommend ?

Well from a personal point of view, neither. They are starting to show their age next to a PC. 99% of the decent games are out on PC anyway. The wife and I are getting a Wii for Christmas, the games are better designed for a console, group of friends after the pub, beer night, whatever.

Though naturally if he hasn't got a decent PC then out of the two I would say PS3 as it makes a decent media centre too.

Hah. Tsh. And other generic pfft comments. The games are designed due to the stick, not added stick to design.

But, the initial question depends on games.

Shooters, xbox. JRPG, PS3.

I don't hate the Wii, i think it's a nice lil casual gaming device for mums and 6 year old kids.

Fact remains, the games are designed to use the stick, not by using the stick in design.

You try to release a game on Wii that doesn't use the stick and i'll come back to you :D

If you are just interested in Games 360 Better selection cheaper Machine
If you want a Blu Ray Player and Media Center plus games get a PS3
If you like gimicks and they keep you attention more than 5 minutes a Wii ;)

*Im sorry for going OT!*

Wouldn't you say all games are designed to work with what ever interaction tool is available to them? Its like saying there are no great games on an XBox or PS3 because they are all designed to use the game pad. I would say a great game is a combination of an idea and an intelligent use of the interaction devices. I think thats what makes the Wii a great console, its got an intuitive interaction device.

Sure there are a load of Wii games that are just "Oh look, I use a stick", are terrible and do nothing for the console image. On the other hand there are a few (usually Nintendo made!) games which are excellent and would not work on any other console. The interaction require for, say, Pro Evolution football is groundbreaking and is hugely well done. And since the controls for many of the games are intuitive, its excellent for the big games nights with loads of newbies =)

Sure, but the majority of games is designed with stick in mind. And no, it's not like saying "they are all designed to use the game pad" because the other consoles don't require you to have this third nipple or a stick up your arse to play them.

Exactly the point.

When they start bringing out games that DON'T use the bloody point/wavey sticky thing as a selling point, i'll start looking into it.

Like the controls were needed for, example, pro evolution. They weren't. They worked fine before, but now it was a "must design" in the design.

Every gimmick "must be" design takes away from games.

Xbox has a much larger games catalogue, has a "better" online service (integated chat and community stuff, not games) but you have to pay for it

PS3 is a more polished console with free online play and a far better media center.

Personally i would ask him what games he likes and buy the console with them on it :p
Bear in mind most of the xbox exclusives have eventually come onto pc

If he has a HDTV and will use it for blue rays as well then a ps3. But only if he will use it for blurays, if he downloads/ rents/ whatever all his movies etc then there is no point.

For games get a 360.

A ps3 is £300 with one game.

A 360 (pro 60gb) will cost you £170 with one game. You can spend the other £130 on quite a few other games.

Nothing beats drunk Mario Cart, tennis or boxing after a night on the piss.

If he is going to bother using it as a media centre then yes, most people won't.

Wii games are great socially, rubbish on their own. My Wii sits collecting dust most of the time.

PC's cost a lot more money, and upgrades cost a fortune to keep everything pretty. It's not a viable route for everyone.

Still an excellent games console =) Have fun with your closet Wii-hating! :fluffle:

Yes, for a casual fun console. That's what i've been saying. I don't hate the Wii, i just don't think of it as a gamer console as much as a casual plaything like guitar hero, which is fun, for a while.

Different democratic altogether, and i doubt Lamp is buying this console for a 35 year old stay home mum or a 3-9 year old kid.

PC had 20+ distinct game genres in the 90s. Each game in a genre was almost completely different from another game in the same genre.

Then development shifted onto consoles, PC titles weren't PC-exclusive anymore, they had to accept console-friendly design and gameplay, and now we have 6 genres, and each game in a specific genre is almost identical to all the others.

gaming is now so mainstream that it has gone the same way as the music and film industry.

Where are games like Baldur's Gate 2/Planescape Torment/Theme Hospital/Fallout/Majesty etc :(
rant off, I wish all consoles a slow and tormenting death.

Amiga tried the games-for-the-fans method of doing things :p

End of the day the companies need to make money, tailoring to niche audiences doesn't give high enough returns to warrant the switch

Compare a decent FPS like stalker (take dmg from bleeding, need to eat and sleep, realistic accuracy, weapons break etc) to halo (auto-aim, hp regen, etc)

just makes me sad inside :(

but oh well, I guess its life :>

Think I'll buy him an Xbox...based on the fact thats its cheaper and there's a bigger games catalogue. The Wii was never ever in consideration. Think Toto's summed up the Wii perfectly. Cheers fellas
