All I'm interested in hearing about is if his discovery leads to a reliable way for Linux to have complete access to all the RSX cores. Then we might have a way to play hardware accelerated 1080p video at normal framerates instead of the slideshow we currently have with the frambuffer.

Getting past the hypervisor will be the first part of the problem. Using the hack methods to get the system to use an nvidia OpenGL driver will be another thing entirely.

Cetainly an interesting first step that shows some promise, but that's all it is for now.

Apparently the hacker thinks Sony cant stop this but they can make it very difficult via updates will be interesting to see what this brings :)

Nothing yet. The hacker thinks he has found a way in, but hasn't actually ran unsigned code on it. Although he has seemingly done more than anyone else, others in the scene think it's another dead end as far as homebrew goes.

Will probably be months before we know for sure.

Ok, so its hacked... what does that actually mean?

Eventually unsigned code will be able to be run, he needs to disable or work around the hypervisor and then almost anything is possible. Homebrew here we come. :D

well anything "decent" and usable is prolly a years time away if he keeps his stuff to himself and keeps things tight.

It's like a drop of blood in the water.
Once the sharks get the scent, they'll start circling around.

This guy has shown that it's technically *possible* to gain complete access to the system, even though it takes custom hardware, assembler level software and specialist microelectronics knowledge. Others will now have a fresh go at doing it for themselves. Most won't get anywhere, but one or two will find a way to duplicate his findings and they won't necessarily be bound by the same moral code as geohot.

I've been scooting around and one or two Linux distros claim they've got hardware acceleration working for HD video playback. Maybe I'll have to revisit Linux on my PS3 again. HD video is painful in framebuffer. :)

He doesn't have "complete access" though.

Just like The Specialist did on the 360, he figured it out and then others worked out what he had done, then C4EVA started writing hacked firmwares for the various models. Exact details don't need to leak, just a rough idea of what he was looking at and before you know it the modchip people will be all over it.

I think he's released his so called "hack" because it's a dead end, which is why he's giving up working on it.

It is possible you are right Stimpy, only time will tell but being able to access system memory and inject code is a promising start.
