I've just set up a 2 station LAN in my house, it uses 2 protacols: TCP/IP and IPX. I can access the net from 1 PC and have so far been able to access the net from the other PC through the LAN. Is there a way for me to play TRIBES or QUAKE2 on the net through the LAN so that both computers can play at once? Also, the proxy program im using is crap

I't doesnt let the client on the LAN use ICQ or Email, it just lets the other PC brows the web, does anyone know a good FREE program?

Hope you can understand this

Quake2 you can certainly do by running Zarjazz's BWProxy or the NF proxy on the modem machine. Don't know about Tribes, sorry.

Virtually all internet programs nowadays have comprehensive firewall options, so all you need is a proxy that supports socks and DNS -- IE will even run over socks instead of a proper http proxy, but you don't get any cache sharing on the modem machine. I don't know any off the top of my head, but there's probably a few on Tucows. You'll need socks v5 to be able to run Q3test through it, though.

Firingsquad did an internet sharing primer, but it's probably best to start at Utumno's latest column if you're interested in that -- however, I don't think any of the software was free.

Anyway, glad to hear you got the LAN working :)

I should think that tribes can also been done through the nitro proxy as it does IP forwarding, not actually tried it tho. <shrug>

Hope this was of any help

We did try to persuade Utumno to write a guide for BarrysWorld on this subject, the best products out there, how to setup and configure them etc. I for one am going to look at WinRoute soon, and rather than pester Ut individually I'll nag him for a guide - perhaps if a few people mail him to suggest it?

Just downloaded Winroute, worked straight away, let me use ICQ on the other machine, i still dont understand how i can run Quake2 on both machines in the same game though (apart from loading up Game Explorer on both machines and connecting to a server as 2 seperate players (pings of 400 each

)

Perhaps it cant actually be done unless i HOST a server on my machine, have ppl join it over the net and have the other machine here connect through the LAN (sounds like a security risk to me!)

But apart from that winroute seems pretty good, problem is its not free.

Also, i've got a feeling that i've got my computer wide open to hackers at the moment, i have my network to use TCP/IP and IPX/SPX, my dial up adapter is set to use TCP/IP only, and the settings for both TCP/IP setups is different, now whats happening is im sharing all my drives with my other machine but does this still share the drives when im on the net? If so, is it easy for someone to use my files accross the internet?

Cheers

You would have to connect to a server as two separate players, sharing the connection. You could try both connecting to the proxy and using compression but, beyond the proxy's latency (a few ms if that), sharing a line shouldn't up your ping... unless the combined rate is too much for the line and packets are dropping. Reubs said in his Methos-pisstake that two TS share a line... maybe he can enlighten us as to how it's done? The host it yourself idea would sort you out with a ULP but everybody else's would be through the roof (assuming you don't have a cablemodem or better). It also isn't a security risk unless there are trojans in the game dll you're using -- which I doubt anyone could get away with; they'd have abused them and been caught by now.

As for file sharing -- filesharing is possible over TCP/IP. I think you disable it by going to the dial-up adapter's TCP/IP settings and unbinding "File and Printer Sharing".

To be able to find you in Network Neighbourhood, people would have to be on the same subnet as you and the dial-up thing would have to support broadcast packets between modem connections. Alternatively, they could find you on IRC, /whois you and ask the computer to run "\\your.ip". However, I wouldn't be surprised if the dialup machines and routers had been set to block both broadcast packets and the windows sharing ports.
