Ok i'm having severe comp problems:

windows XP professional
Abit KG7-lite mobo
512meg RAM
GF2 Titanium
Soundblaster Audigy

All with latest drivers

Ok what happened was i updated my bios and put the newest 4in1 drivers on. All seemed fine but then i noticed IE6 kept encountering problems and shutting down and the only game i play(Tribes2) UE's and then shuts down in the same way. I thought sod it, time for a reinstall anyway as it had been months since i'd reinstalled and i like to do it once in a while. So i reinstalled windows but i'm still experiencing the same problems, took me 3 goes to get to here with IE closing down all the time. I'm really unsure as to what to do next. Could it be the 4in1's or has flashing my mobo caused this?

Have you tried re-applying the BIOS flash?

I've not heard of BIOS issues casuing specific applications to fail. If you're running Win 2000 or XP, what messages are you getting in Event Viewer?

I get something along the lines of "this program has encountered and problem and had to close down" with the option to send a report of the error to microsoft. As soon as it happens again i'll post it here.

k here we go:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Theres then an option to view error report(and send to microsoft)

Error Signature:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2716.2200 Offset: 000a4dbf

Theres then a detailed error report.

Both of you - Go to Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer (assuming you're using XP) and let us know the errors reported in your System Log at the time these crashes take place. There might be something there that's helpful. :/

Blimey! It worked?! Well, there you go... :D

It sounds like your problem is different, Gray and it also sounds like your suffering from a few different problems.

My searches found this and this which may or may not have some useful info. Reinstalling the Windows 2000 Service Pack may sort it out (though in theory you should never need to as they're all protected files). You have already installed the Service Pack, haven't you?

That CDROM error is pretty common and shouldn't be anything to worry about, unless you're getting a whole string of them whenever you access any CDs (retail ones and own copies), which would point to faulty CD-ROM. I'd say this type of error is unlikely to be the result of duff motherboard or IDE socket, but you might want to try using a different IDE cable to connect your CD to the motherboard. Particularly if this is happeneing with a lot of different CD-ROMS, as you say.

The applications hangs are prolly unrelated. How often would you say applications hang? IS it generally IE which goes wrong or a variety?

Well, as i said in a previous Thread, i've been thru 3 CDRoms in like 2days (Second Hand ones at that) so it could be a possibility this one is fux0red too.

I didnt think of Installing the Win2000 Service Pack (As i didnt do it on my Previous Computer, and never ever had any problems) so i may well try that tomorrow.

Also, the Programs dont "hang" i get 2 sorts of problems with IE/Assosrted .exes..

1

It brings up an Error message, and tells me to "restart" the program (most common).

2

It just closes the Program for no rewason what-so-ever

baaastard!

=======

Severice Pack was unable to download all the Service Pack files necessary for installation.

If this Error persist' after you clicked "retrry" several times, go to the Windblows 2000 Service Pack Website and select "DOwnload Problems". This will give you instructions on how to downoad a version which doesnt need an internet connection

Right ok, all my Problems seem sorted now, all i did was go into the BIOS, and do Optimal Default, then set up my CPU again.

No Programs have crashed, or closed down on there own so this seems like its a success... hurrrrrrrrraah!

Shouldn't you clear the BIOS after updating it?

Not a clue.. BUT back onto that Mouse Problem..

I took it to my mates before, and he showed it me working on his computer.. so i takes it home, and once again it wont work for some reason.

WHY?!!?

I'm guessing........

but all your settings are in CMOS? So if u update the BIOS the CMOS will have settings for the old BIOS resulting in total confusion and a very unstable system.

I suspect by applying the Optimal setting you've partially sorted this prob. I'd defo try clearing the CMOS, it's normally one jumper and a two minute job.

Hmm, well i may try taking the Jumper off the mobo tomorrow, but only if ya sure.... heh

S

Worth a try, SG. Do you still have your mobo manual? It'll tell you which jumper is for clearing the CMOS.

You don't normally have to clear the CMOS, although a BIOS update sometimes will depending on the BIOS changes.

I sorted it!! What i did was, i took out my USB ADSL Modem (Alcatel), and plugged the Mouse in (on its own), and it found it straight away!

Then i plugged my modem in, and that worked! so it looks like i found the Problem!

w00t!! :D
