Problems connecting to games under Windows 2000 - help please

hi all.

I have recently upgraded from Windows 98se to Windows 2000 (formatted, clean install). Under Windows 98, CS ran nicely, I got a solid 65fps and ping of 50 with my cable connection.

However, I am having problems connecting to on-line games under windows 2000. I can create and play my own LAN games perfectly with no troubles, getting smooth framerate and everything that I normally got before. When I try to join an online game, I frequently get the error message 'Connection to server timed out' while still in the console. Here is a link to explain what I see:

My console screen

Note that I am running the latest HL/CS versions along with downloading every Windows update available (all service packs). I running on a default CS config. I am also under a clean install so I am not under any firewall (unless windows2000 has a default one, which as far as I know doesn't)

Here is my system setup in brief:

P3 650Mhz
400mb SDRAM
GF3 ti200 with 28.32 drivers.

I do not believe this to be a problem relating to my hardware, as CS ran fine under windows 98 and on LAN. However, I have tried the following:

Running CS in all software modes
Running CS in all resolutions
Disabling options such as high quality sound
Unplugging cable modem etc.

ONCE I managed to get into a server running in software mode and under 400*x resolution, but this personally was unplayable for me as I get 15fps under this mode. I have not been able to get into a game back under these settings since.

And by the way, I have tried different servers :)
Can anyone suggest anything that I could do?

Help much appreciated

Thanks

first thing, update all your drivers, the latest geforce drivers are 40.72's lol. ( 41.09 - but they are beta ).

Are you on 56k?

In my experience the latest drivers are often not the most stable, or reliable. Hunt around, and find some older drivers for your video card. Also, what happens if you try the Windows proprietary drivers?

Do any other games suffer from this problem? Have you tried any OpenGL tests with DirectX?

start your game with -developer 2
that gives you more of an idea of whats happening iirc

Just noticed something..

I opened up the CPU usage box and looked at it at the time that I retried my cs connection - shot straight up to 100% then it said timed out.

Could my lack of CPU power (P3 650) be a problem? (worked fine under 98, not good enough for 2k?)

Shouldnt be, I mean I started halflife on a 266 with 32mb of ram. Man they were the days when my 4mb standard vga couldnt handle 640x480 :/

Really dunno why you shouldnt be able to connect. If anything I would just say your unlucky by getting these problems from BY just as you moved to Win2k.
