Ok, there are a lot of words in the gaming world that i don't know how to pronounce. For example, I didn't know that Deus Ex was actually pronounced Day-yous Ex. So i'm starting this thread. Anyone who doesn't know how to pronounce a gaming term, post it and hopefully someone will give you the right pronuncation. :D

Really ?? I though it was more along the lines of 'juice-eggs' ;)

That's what I thought but my Mum knows Latin and it means 'God former', so really it should be called Ex Deus (Former God) :D

And I used to think Gib was pronounced with a G but it's jib :D

I have always heard it pronounced gibbed as in gibbon, not as in jib. It also sounds better.

No, Jib is much better :p

I believe it to be id (as in the part of the psyche related to whatever, note its id in small letters, not big though, as their games show) though I've heard it called I.D.

and its gib (giblets) as it refers to the same kind of bodily organs / spray etc. that you get from giblets (or whatever)

pld me.

tbh, pld. The giblets thing makes sense but I and everyone I know says Gibbed (ala Gibbon)

Actually Dues Ex has a word cut off the end. The full phrase means "God in the Machine", apparantly. Can't recall what the other word(s) was though...

People that pronounce it as "Gib" fucking anger me. It's Jib as in Giblets that you get out of a chicken which is also pronounced Jiblets.

gib·lets (jblts)
pl.n.

The edible heart, liver, or gizzard of a fowl.

I thank you, fuck off

gib vs. gib

Look, the word aint in the dictionary, and it's safe to say it's an invented word, and there's no right or wrong way to say it. SO STOP ARGUING NOW j00 BIATCHES! I personally pronounce it "gib" as in gibbon, as I was bought up knowing the word "jib" means cum :) so i would never tell my friend: "I was playing Q3/UT/CS the other day and when I killed my opponent with an RL, he jibbed all over the place" :D

And on a different note, what about the pronounciation of the Quake episode 1 boss, "Chthon"?

The fact that gib (Jib, soft G, as in giraffe) is a cut down version of Giblets (ditto above) doesn't strike you as in the dictionary then?

I'm told manx people say with a hard G. But thats because they're backwards. Its Jiblets (with a G, obviously) and the sooner you can comprehend the english language the better.

Do not make me post the log of grimmeh being a fuckwit over the whole matter (and giving up to realise I was taking the utter piss) :D :)

Lo perplex for actually knowing wtf he's talking about too.

The trouble is, if you say "jib" rather than "gib", you are expected to stick a parrot on your shoulder and shout "splice the mainbrace! AHA me hearties! raise the jib!".

:)

Deus Ex Machina as Mr B said.

And it means 'God out of the Machinery' literally. It was a term used in Greek plays to indicate when the representation of a god was lowered from the machinery above the stage. The phrase is commonly used to describe a rather implausible and sudden end to a story - because a god can just strike everyone dead, or solve a mystery cos it's a god, or bring someone back to life, and so on.

Go watch The Matrix for a Deus Ex Machina ending.
