I'm sad now. As I don't subscribe to the 'better place' theory, someone's death to me just means we'll never get to see them again. Ever. :(

...And the death of someone who's "royal" is more saddening than any other person's death how?

Why on earth do we still have a monarchy? it's 2002, not 1600.

Lets not start this argument again.

I wasn't saying otherwise - of course death saddens me, I just find it deeply worrying how a considerable amount of people deem the death of someone in the public eye a lot more saddening than say someone who lost a battle with cancer that they've never heard of before.

If it didn't sell papers, they wouldn't report it. It's people who would have to change, not the media institutions who highlight such figures.

doing that sort of thing for history now *SENSATIONALISM* and *MORAL PANIC* (doing jack the ripper) this country is hungry for gossip on everyone in a high stature or who is famous, for god sakes at least let some of them get on with their lives?

I'm not going to go off on one about this as I have done it many times before. So instead I will refer the right honourable gentleman to the phrases "National Heritage", "What would we gain?", "Have you seen the state of America?", "Why does modernisation always mean getting rid of things?", "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "The rest of the world isn't annoyed with having Monarchy's, so why are some of us?".

Thank you.

Dunno how a monarchy is good for the country Wilier. it actually costs the country far more economically when you think about it

Wrong answer. Do some research and you'll see that you're way off the mark. As far as income/expenditure goes the Monarchy provide a very good investment return.

Oh, for the love of donkeys. Let me highlight a post I wrote on this thread.

The 'truth' as you put it, is imo that the monarchs are part of our national identity and although cost the tax payer 55mil pa apparently reinvest 95mil pa into projects, communities, charities throughout the UK (D of E scheme for example?). They also attract a huge amount of tourism, they may not hold any 'real' power in these modern times but you ask any American, "Who runs England?" and I assure you, they'll reply, "The queen, of course". I know because an American said that to me. The myth of royalty and its powers in this country is legendry and a point of wonder and fantasy for people who don't live here, if they want to come here, spend their dosh and keep businesses and thereon our economy healthier for it, I have nothing against them.

'Down with the monarchy' is just not a viable option. They do no harm imo and contrary to red-top tabloids argument do not cost us huge amounts of money for nothing in return.*

*Subject to bigbb's theory and highly subjective, please allow him to revel in his argument before suggesting he, "Fucks off and dies".

This argument has been covered.

...and will people stop trying to rid the country of the last ounce of culture and heritage we have left. Go away and live in America.
