Had the misfortune of working there today and I know I'm from the whitest town in England, but holy fuck, firstly the place is a shithole and secondly it's completely full, as in FULL with Muslims, Pakistani's and Indians. I was the only white guy in the petrol station, the only white guy in the block of flats and the only man without a big fuck off scraggly beard.
It's like downtown Iraq, not used to this and all those Arabic outfits and ninja women just makes me feel really uneasy, it's like the Xenophobic version of finding a spider on your leg.

I tried not to, but like the part of you that enjoys a disaster, I couldn't help it, to anyone who isn't used to it, it's like an invasion of zombies, 15 women in full burkhas crossing in front of you and the pavements lined with scraggly beards and funny hats.

It is an English city. You can tell really easily - when you look on a map you find it in "England".

I grew up on the Wirral. Met two asian girls and one black lad before I was 18. The asian girls moved away 'cause of racism and the black lad was the only one in our school (700 pupils). He was a thief and a bully and was expelled.

I left for Uni in Bradford and lived in the areas which were 60%+ asian. What you described was my situation on a daily basis. I found it unnerving at first as I wasn't used to it but it very quickly became normal.

Nowadays I'd only notice because I live in a majority white bit of Nottingham - so it's not what I see when I walk out the front door. Walking into a majority-minorities area doesn't make feel uncomfortable any more as I know that there's nothing to feel uncomfortable about.

Admittedly - if I was a white single girl alone I'd be uncomfortable. But I'm not, so...

Sounds like the opposite of me coming down from Wolverhampton to Cheltenham, was confused when everyone was/is white, hell it was unnerving hah. But then Cheltenham is the Cotswolds and all that so it is expected.

Preston is hardly that mixed I've found, not nearly as much as the Midland areas.

When I first moved to Washington about a year and a half ago it was much different than back in Ireland. DC is 60% Black ....Galway, ireland is probably 5% if even. Having said that I can't say it has ever un-nerved me. Sure I noticed it at first but not really in a bad way, more of a "huh, that's new" way. tbh I personally couldn't care less what colour, gender, religion or sexual orientation someone is, as long as they leave me the hell alone. Sadly, and I am probably also going to sound a bit like Toh, but I've come to the conclusion that it's a people thing. People notice those who not as themselves (eg as the noticer, if you will). Someone can't help noticing or being noticed. The major point, is what happens afterwards. Ie what someone does when they notice something different, or what the different person does when they notice that they're noticed (ooh err).

More because if you live anywhere near the Capitol or any significant building then the security and police presense is insane .. no wonder you wouldnt get unnerved. 10 or so blocks out and DC is a shithole.

I was absolutely astounded by the Asian / Muslim community down in Yorkshire. Like Job, I was the only white face.

There's nothing wrong with that, but when you're not used to it then it comes as a bit of a culture shock.

Xenophobic I may be, but I believe most people are until they get used to it, hardly a rascist as I had a black girlfriend for 10 years (though I could never do that black 'meeting' ).
Yes people still feel like this in 2011, much, much more than would admit it 'Ninja women and 'fuck off straggly beards' is an observation no different than tattoed chavs or people in posh wellies.
We are just conditioned by the thought police, for obvious reasons, to suppress these thoughts.
Liverpool has minorities in certain areas, mostly chinese and they don't give my instincts any reaction at all, probably because they dress western and so do any Muslims, you'll very rarely see a long white dress on a man and a burkha would stop traffic.
How people can think that the wholesale rewriting of the cultural landscape of major cities in less than 50 years is something than should go unmentioned is beyond me, we need to talk about it openly or the pressure will just increase till it pops.
I don't think for one minute their is anything sinister about all these cultures, I meet all kinds in my job, and they are as honest, open minded and educated as anyone. We can't ignore the resentment and fear that is growing in the indigenous population just because we've told them not to think it.
